Description

Petro wants the 8th year on his contract. An 8th year allows contract flexibility regarding the way money is structured. A receiving team engaged in a sign-and-trade would have to move money in order to complete the trade. Toronto is Petro's home and desperately needs a RHD stud. In this ACGM, Petro's agent negotiates the deal with Toronto for what they are willing to pay and presents it to the Blues. The Blues sign Petro to that contract so that both he and Toronto get the desired 8th year. Toronto moves out salary in the trade. The Blues do Petro a favor by giving him that 8th contract year. Petro does the Blues a favor by signing. Blues get a needed winger.

Leafs and no team is paying Pietrangelo 9.75m and maybe not even a eight year deal. Leafs would be much better off, signing a UFADman (whoever it may be) and if cap is needed trading Nylander for futures.

Sign and trades rarely happen, And besides Toronto isn't giving up Nylander for basically one year of extra control at a ridiculous price for Pietrangelo.
