Description
Better depth and a playoff caliber team, regret giving up that many picks but this team won’t accept a rebuild till
The 22 draft anyways so this isn’t as bad as it looks, if we bomb we off the pieces we got for better returns at the deadline just like last season.
Danault on the top line because he is more of a passer than shooter and that sets up Hertl and Meir for good seasons
Plus Danault is a better defensive forward to play against other teams top lines leaving couch and Kane better opportunities on the second line

But he doesn’t want to be your guys 3C and has politely stated that! Not too long before he gets disgruntled and I thought that was more than fair offer for a guy who has never reached 15 goals.

What about Domi he wants out and hasn’t been shy.

Domi never asked for a trade and they start negotiating a contract

For Danault, yes, he doesn’t score but he does everything else so good, GM knows that. But it’s just a tactic of negotiation, he doesn’t want out.

Who cares about his total goals, that's not how you analyse a player. The guy is avering 45-50 pts in his last 3 seasons while being voted top 10 in selke vote 2 years in a row. What you offered is basically a 2nd round pick (30 or 31th) a 3rd and a AHL player. This is far faaaar from reality.

I really like Danult and I know his value but in this leauge he’s not getting you what you think he is.

From his comments I saw a guy who wanted out but maybe I’m wrong, I like the guy and I know his value but in this leauge goal scorers get the better contracts and better trade value even though the danault’s win you cups

He won't be our 3rd line center. Neither Kotkaniemi nor Suzuki are as good defensively as him. He will be playing heavy minutes in the defensive zone. He never played PP time so it's not like we are taking that away from him.

Nothing he said sounded like he wanted out. He just didn't want to play 3rd line minutes, which is fair

I agree he’s to valuable for that role but with the center depth you guys have and the young talent coming up where else would he play?

He's going to be a defensive specialist with first line PK time. Montreal rolls 4 lines so there is no 1/2/3/4 lines.

But I think that’s what the problem was he wants more offensive roll not just defensive roll that’s literally what he said!

That’s a dumb thing to say there are always 4 lines and your not putting first line talent on your 4th line or 3rd line
And again he doesn’t want to be a defensive specialist he literally said that which is why I am trading for him!

He said he didn't want to be a 3rd line center. He will continue to do what he did in the previous 2 seasons, Kotkaniemi nor Suzuki would take that away.

No there aren't 1/2/3/4 lines. There are TOI, and Montreal usually has the first 3 lines play around the same minutes with the 4th around 10-12 minutes. A ton of teams do that

First two line play similar minuets and on the power play 3rd line plays similar Even strength but no or little power play more PK and usually 4th line plays about 2/3 of the even strength shifts the first 2 lines play but play more PK unless you have a guy like Danault who plays both pk and pp

When all is said and done
first line is at 19 min
2nd at 17
3rd at 14
4 around 10
Give or take a superstar or two who crack 20+ Min.

And let’s be real No one has 30+ goal scorers on their 3rd line so don’t tell me they are even they are distinct but I’ll give you most teams role their top 3 lines evenly and the 4th based on situations

And that was part of the problem that’s what he doesn’t want is to be a defensive specialist/ grinder

I didn't hear him say that, he just said he was utilized as a 3rd line center in the playoffs after he disappeared.

But trivial, but Engvall really can’t play center to be honest. I like the construct of the team though.

I see potential in Engval give him a year with a guy like marleau for tutelage and if he can’t play center swing him out to wing and give another kid a shot

“I don’t know if I’m ready for this honestly,” Danault said Thursday during a post-season conference call. “I love producing offensively and have enjoyed my role the past two seasons. I don’t know if I want to limit myself to a specific role, which would only be defensive. I don’t think I will get better by playing just defensively.

“I’ve seen my role change during the playoffs, but with what I’ve proven in the last few years, my role shouldn’t change in Montreal,” Danault added. “I have demonstrated that I am capable of playing both defensively and offensively. “

That’s a direct quote, being nice but flat out saying he doesn’t like what his role on the team is shaping up to be.

Didn't Julien respond by saying "Ice time is earned" or something along those lines?

Ok..... and again im saying the writing is on the wall
That he wants out and you guys are arguing he’s fine and your arguments to me are crazy cause everything your saying to justify him staying is exactly why I see him wanting out.

He's clearly saying he wants out if he's going to become a 3rd line defensive forward which I don't think he will be.

So is Danault your 1C???? I’d assume that Suzuki has earned that roll.
2C clearly looks like it’s going to Kotkaniemi and even if it’s not this year obviously would happen by next year.
So even if Danault is the 2C this years he isn’t in the Canadiens future plans unless it’s at 3C or the wing.
I think Danault sees the writing on the wall as a relegated roll meaning less paycheck and less opportunity and I feel
He wants out.
I see this as a solid opportunity to do what’s right for the player and the team trade him before he walks via free agency. And recoup some value.

Like I said previously, Montreal doesn't really have 1/2/3/4 lines and if you look at the playoffs, Danault got the most TOI/Game of any forwards so it's not like he's relegated whatsoever.

We keep him until about a month before the trade deadline and see where contract talks have gone. If nothing has progressed or they aren't close, then we talk about trading him.
