Overpay for Tanev, if you're spending that much why not go after Barrie

Not an overpayment at all. $5.5-6 is what he’ll get. I expect Eller to be moved season after next and Seattle will take one of Siegenthaler, Jensen, Hagelin, Panik. If it’s a dman, Fehervary moves up and Alexeyev may come in. If it’s a forward, McMichael slides right in

They can afford Ovi getting a bit more per year with those moves and cap going up.

If that's what Tanev is going to get, I'd prefer to pass. Go for a younger cheaper Dman, the drop-off can't be that much.

If the economy and the salary cap were still growing and 20 teams were planning to spend 80M on salaries, then a decent two-way defenseman who's outside of the top-5 UFA defensemen could get that. Yes.

This year, I'd bet he gets closer to about 2.5M, maybe 3M. And that's why he could become good value for the Caps. (eta: at 3.5? Pass)

This year Domingue gets about 800k, but WSH can get a proven starter at 1.1M.

Forbort gets 700k and would look great in the press box, eating popcorn. Bigger press box need is RHD, though.

Tanev is in the top 5 UFA defenseman available and probably the best outside of Pietrangelo. At least defensively (depends how highly you value Barrie and his offense). He’s already making nearly $5 million, he’s not going to take a paycut of nearly half. At the bare minimum it’s 5x5 but he can definitely make $6 million fairly easily. Dillon is going to get $3.5 and he’s significantly worse than Tanev, so I’m not sure why you’d pass on him at $3.5 either.

A proven starter cannot be had for $1.1 million this year either. There is no starting goalie on the market that will take that kind of paycut even for a year.

I think you’re taking the flat cap too far, players won’t take a significant paycut. They’ll get their worth, teams will just have to fit them in

There isn’t anyone else in the market younger and cheaper with a similar skill set.
