Faulk to Toronto

Team: 2020-21 St. Louis Blues
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 21, 2020
Published: Sep. 21, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Toronto has been shopping for a top right hand defenseman. I'm playing spitball on what a trade to Toronto would look like if Faulk was involved. He had a rough start of the year but played solid in the playoffs. He has a ton of upside and I think that he ends up being a steal for Toronto.

How does a 28 yo have a ton of upside?

It's pretty common knowledge at this point that typical NHL players peak is age 23 - 27.

Leafs will be looking elsewhere to fill that spot.

You see, this could end up being pure GOLD for Toronto or it could be terrible. I’m not completely opposed to it though.

Dubas had a lot of opportunity to acquire Faulk last year and didn't when he only had a year left and was coming off a career season and the cap was going to raise at some point. Can't see them pulling the trigger now.

Only on CapFriendly are the Leafs shopping for a RHD. Fact is the Leafs are shopping for a good Dman on a good value contract, with the bonus he is right handed.
Faulk NTC likely kills any deal anyhow.
Gee, for 2m more, maybe less, the Leafs can just PIetrangelo.

I don't know if I necessarily agree with the age. Sure we see a lot of phenoms at a young age. McDavid, Heiskanen, Petterson, etc. But I'm of the mindset that a lot of players don't start filling into their prime towards 25-30. (I'm willing to be convinced otherwise). That being said, D is a little different. You'll see a lot of the get better with age which is why teams are willing to throw 8 mill at a guy into his late thirties (Burns, Karlsson, Pietro, etc.)

Faulk has versatility in that he can play both sides. Also, not that I can get into the head of any player but Toronto is a good city to play for. They are cup contenders, great hockey city, and you get to play with Taveres, Mathews, etc.

Aww man.....Faulk to Toronto

this brings back memories

Toronto fans hate seeing Faulk to Tor trades almost as much as Carolina fans hate seeing all the ridiculous Pesce to Tor trades

Thank you for making this BTW, fond memories.

age curves. player peaks around 22-26

— dom luszczyszyn (@domluszczyszyn) July 1, 2019

Tweet from head NHL stat junkie/analytics guru at The Athletic. In general most writers/people agree age 23-27 is when players peak.

I don't think terrible contracts like the Burns, Karlsson, etc. is very good proof that players peak later. It's proof that a lot of GMs can make awful decisions.

The way safer bet on Faulk is this is the beginning of his decline (way more evidence players decline after age 28/29) and he underperforms his current contract, then him bouncing back and outplaying his contract.

Faulk is an even worse version of Barrie and has a terrible contract extension kicking in next year. Hard pass by Toronto

i mean except 90% of the pesce trades involve nylander going to carolina making it fair. This is just toronto taking on a bad contract

look at literally any star players career and see when their peak years were. spoiler, they are not after 27 in like 99.9999% of cases

This would be the furthest from "Gold" for Toronto. If the Leafs can't pry parayko (which they 1000% can't without blowing up the team and even then I don't think blues bite), or able to sign Pietro, then they will look at other cheaper options.. If they go after faulk then its a barrie 2.0 situation..

It could be gold if Faulk returns to his Carolina form.

Maybe offensively but Leafs need reliability and defensive depth, don't think Leafs even consider Faulk... unless Dubas sees some stupid advanced analytics stat and it blows up in his face. Based on the tweets re: talks with Pietro and the blues being off and him being told to peruse free agency, then that Faulk extension could be one of the biggest blunders to happen to a franchise with a potential hall of famer.

no, it is without a doubt a terrible horrible no good very bad contract and everyone not in the blues front office or Faulk or his agent thought so the moment the pen was put to paper

I think that is more than fair, but I HIGHLY disagree with your "90%" evaluation there
