Answer to Penguins trolls

Description
Some Penguins fans keep posting Eller and Orlov for Letang, and then deleting it. When pressed on why the Caps give up a younger, defensively better Orlov for an injury prone Letang who averages four more even strength points per year than Orlov, over the last five years, at a 2.5M higher cap hit, Pens fans insist that the Caps' GM wants Letang, and then ask casual Caps fans why.

Why? We don't know. If the Caps, who are already arguably stronger at defense, goal and wing than center, are trying to trade their #2 defenseman and their #3 center for a different #2 defenseman, it would have to mean they have some kind of really great deal out there to swap their #1 defenseman out for a #1 center.

So let's try to guess what that could be.

I'll start, but in the comments, everybody please propose the most ridiculous Carlson trade you can imagine. Best if it targets a center, but really, Carlson for the moon and stars. Do I hear Draisaitl? Carlson and some stuff for Couturier? Is there enough value on this roster to trade for Eichel? Hit me with ideas.

I think it’s dumb for both sides. The pens only have 2 right shot defensemen. So trading the guy that plays 25-30 minutes a night and in all situations for another left shot defenseman that we have 483726493635 of seems a bit stupid to me. And Washington already has Carlson for only 750k more who is in his prime right now. I’m sure they don’t want to bring in Letang to replace him. And Letang wouldn’t go anywhere where he would possibly be a second pair defenseman except maybe Montreal. If the pens were to trade Letang, they might as well blow it up if they aren’t getting at least another top 4 RHD+ in return.

Agree the Pens get thin on RHD. Lemme try to build their side.

I don't like adding Letang as #2RD behind Carlson, but if Carlson and Kuznetsov can really land Drai, then I think the Caps have avoided a rebuild: when Ovechkin, Backstrom, and Letang retire, Washington is left with a top line of Vrana, Draisaitl, Wilson, a top pair of Fehervary and Alexeyev, and probably Samsonov in net.

But I think you're overlooking just how many average, run of the mill, 18-19 minute RHD are available in UFA this summer. With a flat cap, a lot of them are going to be cheap. Pittsburgh could make this trade, sign Krug at 8.5M, and then sign Ceci at 1M, and be just fine at RD.

Yeah but Ceci would be terrible in our system. I’d rather sign D that would fit. And I’d rather just keep Letang at 1.25 million cheaper than Krug. And maybe sign a guy like pysyk on a cheap deal.

My fault. Typo. Krug shoots lefty. 2nd RHD behind Pietrangelo is Barrie. Lack of defense should make him cheaper than Letang. I built a team with Barrie at 6M and Eller. Whether it's a better team depends on whether you evaluate how much skill a team has when healthy, or how many actual points you expect to get out of guys during a season and/or a postseason. I know Lemieux used to be so good when he showed up that it literally didn't matter that he had to miss two thirds of a season; he was still too valuable to trade. I'm not sure I see Letang in quite that category. Crosby? Yes. Guentzel? Undecided.

I still wouldn’t trade Letang. I think Barrie is quite the drop off from Letang. He’d be a solid number 2 but we already have Marino on an entry level contract there. And I don’t think Marino is quite ready to take over for Letang as the guy playing 25-30 minutes a night. And weird fact just to kind of show how crazy weird 2020 is...out of our core players (Murray, Letang, Crosby, Malkin, and Guentzel) the least injury prone last year were Murray and Letang, who are usually the most injury prone lol.

There's no guarantee we get Pietrangelo. Then we have to fill arguably the most difficult hole to fill in all of hockey

Fair point. Make the trade contingent on Pietrangelo, or at least Barrie, agreeing to come play 1RD in WSH. Set it up a couple days before free agency starts, after the team's met with a couple guys?

It's a step backwards, short term, because you lose all the ways that the guys on the power play know each other, now, and know how to play together. So the Caps get slightly worse going into an odd season. It's definitely still a questionable move. But Draisaitl's only 24, similar in age to Vrana and Wilson. That could be the top line, six years from now, so the team avoids rebuilding.
