Roster Shake Up

Created by: rhfa61
Team: 2020-21 Los Angeles Kings
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 21, 2020
Published: Sep. 21, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Reports that PHI wants to dump some salary, and these two players are guys they want gone. LAK have the salary room to add them, maybe a change of scenery brings back their game. LAK add a 1st rounder, maybe boost their team to the playoffs next season. PHI dumps $11M in cap hit, maybe adds a key free agent.

Let me PHI & LAK fans what you think and/or if you alter the trade. Thanks.

I don't think the Kings do this. If each of the contracts were a year shorter, then maybe, but 3 years is too long for them to take on $11.5M in cap hit. Guys like Vilardi, Kupari, Clague, Anderson, etc. will all need extensions before these contracts fall off the books. Moving up 35ish spots in the draft isn't enough reward for that much salary.

I feel like Vilardi, Kupari, Clague and Anderson will all be taking bridge contracts, Ghost isn't ideal I'll give you that but we could potentially flip JVR and Ghost at the deadline with $1M or so retained. We want to take on contracts for high picks, if we can trade thoses assets again all the better.

I don't think you can bank on those guys taking bridge contracts. What if Vilardi turns into the next Brayden Point? I'm not saying he will, but he's only half a season into his professional career after returning from serious injury. If he continues to get better, even a bridge deal could cost $7M+.

There are better structured contracts that can be taken on that will return an unmitigated 1st, not just a 30ish position upgrade. Loui Eriksson's deal is a prime example. He'd return an unmitigated 1st, and his contract is only for two additional years, not 3.

Drop the 2nd going back to Philadelphia, or have Philly retain 25% on both contracts, and maybe this is a decent idea. Otherwise, the Kings can find better ways to spend that cap space.

What do you think about just JVR and the Flyers 1st for the Kings 2nd? Is moving up like 11 spots in the draft worth it? OR would we need to consider something else.

I mean the more I think about it, the more they could probably get a better deal without taking on such long term cap. 11 spots aint much for $21M in cap over the next three years.

As a Kings fan this is a HARD no for me. If I'm taking on a combined 11.5 mil for 3 years, id want it to be for players that could help us. Im fine with bringing in JVR on like 1 mil retained w a 1st for Moore and a 2nd tho.
