Blueline shuffle and Demko the man - Year 1

Created by: alwaysnextyear
Team: 2020-21 Vancouver Canucks
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 19, 2020
Published: Sep. 21, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
If the rumors are true that Green wants some turnover on his blueline and Markstrom wants a giant contract, then the Canucks could do worse than this scenario IMO.

Locked up DeMelo and Toffoli as I think both are great fits in the top 4/top 6.

Gave Talbot a 2 year deal that satisfies the exposure requirements for the expansion draft and gives Demko a solid 1B tandem partner.

I don't see a realistic way for this blue line to improve if we lose Tanev.

IF you add DeMelo and Miller it's hard to say that's not an improvement.

I was a big Tanev fan for a lot of years, but his possession numbers have fallen off recently. At his age and with his injury history I hope they don't bring him back on a long term deal if they bring him back at all. I think DeMelo could fill that spot for less money and do just as well if not better than a declining Tanev.

I think DeMelo is good and would step in to the role that Tanev plays, but I don't think he can play that way quite as effectively. I'm not sure how good Miller actually is given he was playing on Buffalo, but he didn't look like much this year.

I think DeMelo would be able to replace about 70% - 80% of what Tanev brings, which is pretty good especially since he'll be cheaper. However, the drop off from Tanev to our next best RHD is so steep that the difference would be considerable I think.

Ya those are probably accurate assessments. I would say you've hedged your bet and you've gotten younger. I think Tanev is definitely on the decline and I could see it being pretty drastic in the next yr or two.

Miller I think could be good. He was excellent in Vegas when his role was bigger. He was bad last yr though so it would be a risk but I think I'd take it, the upside is there.

Not sure why he was in the doghouse in the beginning of the year. His numbers were good and there was no reports stating locker room problems. But when he was unleashed with Dahlin for the last month Miller was superb.

Buf was a top 7 D at 5v5. Miller was a part of that. He could be traded due to the glut of RHD on buf. but it wont be for the above trade proposed. It would be close to Virt for Miller 1 for 1, adding Roussel means Van is adding a pick or prospect to make adding the salary worth it.

The main thing with Miller is that he wouldn't be getting PP1 time or prime offensive zone starts; those go to Hughes. I'm not sure adding a secondary offensive defenseman is what we need when Edler, Myers and Juolevi next year will be able to play in a secondary offensive role. I don't think he'd be getting that much more opportunity here.

That is true, I always thought of him as a more rounded player but looking at his advanced metrics he def only succeeded as a sheltered offensive guy.

Overall good thoughts and fairly realistic nice work. I feel like Demelo had a good year and is maybe a top four d.. but top pairing seems like a risk. I know giving up draft picks isn’t wise as they have given up so much... but I feel squeezing Tampa and aquiring Cernak would be a better fit, more similar in the mold of Tanev just younger and a bit more physical. An offer sheet might be expensive, but offering up Rafferty who looks to be nhl ready on a cheap contract and a 2nd to Tampa might entice them.. or a second and Kole Lind Or something along those lines could maybe get it done. Just my opinion.. but good job
Canucks33 liked this.
