Description
I’ve said it before, but I’m a big Frank Vatrano fan. I think he’s a very good middle six forward, lots of energy and skill to his game. Florida probably shouldn’t be trading him, given they will probably lose Hoffman and/or Dadonov this offseason, but their D is not pretty so here’s an offer I think they’d have to consider. Mayfield is a guy who could easily slot into their top-4, play a bit on the penalty kill and provide some strong defense in all situations. Personally, I do think Islanders fan overvalue him a little bit but I still think he’s a very good number 4 and at $1.45 million for three (!) more years, that’s a guy you want in your lineup if you can have him. MDC is included as a throw-in to round out the value and give Florida a 12th-13th forward on a league minimum deal.

As for the rest of the moves, I’ve suggested them before. Leddy could go wherever, but Boston is a destination that seems to be picking up some traction, might be a decent replacement for Krug. I also think a partner like McAvoy or Carlo could help iron out some of the deficiencies in his game and improve his effectiveness. The Boychuk dump is one of many I’ve considered over the last little while. His M-NTC isn’t as big an issue as I originally thought it might be; whoever trades for him can buy him out if he doesn’t want to play there and then he’s welcome to sign with whoever once he’s a UFA. But regardless, this move hasn’t gotten a ton of flack in the past. I’m okay with losing Wilde and the addition of Vatrano hurts Bellows’ chances of making the team next year. In exchange, the Isles get Miles Wood, who isn’t great but could be utilized as an okay 4th liner with some bite and skill. He makes just under half of what Boychuk does for just as long, so it’s almost like we’re just retaining that much, especially when we’re essentially getting a replacement level player back.

For the lineup, I hate breaking up the 4th line, but I think it’s too expensive a luxury for us to keep. Bardreau looked great in his call-up, I think he could stick on that 4th line, especially with Martin and Zeeker to help him out. If he’s not fitting right, Wood can go in and take his spot. Aho in the lineup is a bit unrealistic, I’ll admit. The new regime doesn’t seem to have much faith in him, but the numbers in the AHL are definitely there. I’d really like to see what he can do in the NHL before we use him to dump another bad contract or move him for another pick or prospect. His offense could go well with Greene’s defense. If he isn’t getting it done, we’ve either got Thomas Hickey, who I still think could be effective if he’s healthy or we could sign someone for <$1 million (Joakim Ryan is a guy I like). Dobson at 2RD is risky too, but he looked great this season, outside of some brain-farts 20 year old kids are known to make in their rookie seasons. I think he can handle it and I’d be willing to give him the opportunity to prove me right.

So that’s that for now. Like I said, Florida trading Vatrano is unlikely but crazier things have happened and I think Mayfield is a good piece to replace him with.

No thanks on that Vatrano trade.

Doubt the Devils will help us with cap dumps.

BOS trade is good.

Ohhhhh on Leddy.

Ideally, no. But I’d be okay with taking and buying out a guy like John Moore if that gets a deal done.

If it’s a matter of preference on Vatrano, I get it, but valuewise, do you think it’s fair?

Eh not really. Vatranos are out there all over the place, guys like Mayfield aren't.

I'd maybe even up it to a 2021 second if you took on the Moore contract

I'd be willing to do that. The Moore buyout is a little more expensive than I thought, so another move would have to be made. Maybe find a way to dump Komarov or something.

Again, if there's a way to move Leddy's whole cap hit, that's the direction I'd hope they go it, but I'll admit, it seems a little difficult for that to happen now

I don't really see what you mean by that. Outside of his contract, Mayfield is a pretty standard 2nd pairing DFD; he's good in his own end, brings a lot of physicality and doesn't contribute much offensively. With Dobson coming up, I think we could capitalize that value, plus the nice contract and get back a strong asset, in this case Vatrano, who I think is a bit of everything we need. He's aggressive in the OZ, skates well, can contribute on the PP, shoots a lot (albeit to a fault) and has the tools to be competent defensively. If we could add all of that, plus about 17-22 goals at only about $2.5 million, I'm willing to trade a guy like Mayfield for that.

Of course, all the reasons I just mentioned are reasons as to why Florida should keep him but I'm just throwing it out there

I think that that is a really big overpayment for a guy like Wood. I would think that Boychuck+Wilde would be enough to get the deal done but I understand where you are coming from in this scenario.

Well, we're not trading for Wood per se, we'd be trading to get rid of Boychuk. In fairness, I don't know how highly the Devils would value Wood, so maybe it's unfair to classify him as a throw-in on the other side of a cap dump, but the way I see it, we'd take him to offset some of the financial burden NJ takes on in taking Boychuk's contract.

In this scenario, are you saying that the Isles are trading both Bellows and Wilde?

If that's what it costs, I'd say yes. Boychuk's contract hurts us this year and it's going to hurt us next year when Beau, Pelech and Sorokin are up. Gonna get quite a bit of relief by moving his whole deal. If Wood plays well, we can look to trade him next offseason or at the deadline if we need money

I think that is a lot to give up to me that contract out. I know that the Isles are contending for the Cup now but they still need some prospects to plug into the line-up. That's what let Chicago and Pittsburgh to contend for so long.

We'd still have guys. Wahlstrom and Dobson are both going to be big pieces. Holmstrom wasn't a great pick last year but I hope he can contribute in some capacity at the NHL level. Koivula, Hutton and Bolduc all have lower ceilings, but do project to be good depth pieces coming up in the next 2-3 years. In this scenario, we also keep our 1st in 2021, which will hopefully yield another good prospect. If we can keep one of Bellows or Wilde and still most of Boychuk's money, then absolutely, I'm all for that, but we've also gotta figure things out for right now, because that is when our contention window is at it's most wide open, if that makes sense.
