Kings are good and so are Leafs without this trade. if our options were to have Byfield/Stutzle and keep Doughty (expose him next year if we are desperate to lose his contract) OR lose our second overall and gain Marner at $10.5M cap hit. I'd take the former rather than the latter.

No way the Kraken would take Doughty IMHO. That contract is an albatross. Only way to move it is with a deal similar to this one. This offer at least gets the Kings a great young, fast player in return, with some experience to play with all their kids. Marner's contract is huge too, but it is not an anchor like Drews.

the only situation DD ends up a Leaf is if Kings bought him out and he signed a cheaper deal with TO

Actually I think he's NMC so I don't think he even can be grabbed. But either way, there is no rush for the Kings to move this contract until they are truly competing, we have one of the lowest cap hits in the league, and don't have any elite players with contract reups until three years from now. If we need to make a move, we'll do it years from now and keep Byfield/Stutzle. Not to mention the Kings can use this cap space to their advantage over the next few years to keep bolstering our youth movement.
