Green Light to spend to cap

Description
Now that its out there that we WILL spend to the cap, let's take a look at some shrewd moves we can make to both get better and get value out of team that are a little cash or cap strapped

McQuaid and Schenn are perfect cheap fits for 6/7D men. If McQuaid is healthy enough to play he would draw in before Schenn... if both schenn & McQuaid are healthy can send Middleton back down to AHL and use his roster spot on one of the Forward prospects currently in AHL. (Blichfeld, True, Bergmann, Yurtaykin would be first up IMO)

Howard signs cheap since he was garbage this season in Detroit and won't be resigned but doesn't want to retire yet, contract would be after PTO in training camp. If he gets beat out at camp my guess would be that Melnichuk is the back up, maybe you sign Howard anyway and have him play in AHL as a backup plan?

I was trying to think of who else we could realisticly want, I can see them wanting someone who played at least 40games over last 2 season.
Not sure who else to go for that will be cheap..... any ideas?

I trade for Stalock All the time since min has a young stud and Dubnyk and he is expendable. He’s my top choice
Hutchinson from Colorado will be cheap and has 127 starts
Craig Anderson from OTT is an option
And dell is better than howard too

Blues would need to get rid of Bozak or Steen. Sundqvist is more important than both of those guys and he’s a lot cheaper

Free agents at a similar price point I can think of include Elliott, Craig Andersen, Dell, and Mike Smith. I personally am not a fan of any of them, but that’s kind of how I see it. If you want someone similar via trade, Stalock would fit the bill or someone like Mrazek with retention could as well.

Alright, so I see that people have already covered that Howard is not the way to go - like, dude, you think our goal tending has been a problem the last 2 years? Howard is five years older than Dell is and had .882 in 27 games vs Dell's .907 in 33 games. I get it, you want a cheap goalie, but maybe consider that your money might be better spent in trying to find a solid goalie than investing that much in the forwards? Because all the firepower in the world isn't gonna help if your backup goalie gargles balls and your starting goalie has been at .896 for the last two seasons.

The thing that nobody else has mentioned though is the idea of getting rid of Sorensen and bringing in the slightly more expensive Hinostroza. Is it just based off of LW vs RW? Or age? Because their numbers aren't all that much off and Sorensen has been better in the playoffs by a significant margin. Is it because you feel like you need to send Sorensen off to Tampa Bay to get Killorn? Because I understand the idea of exploiting other team's cap woes, but I really doubt that we get a 50 point 3rd overall player for a third line winger and a 3rd round pick - they can absolutely do better than that.

I'm also curious about why you'd be going after Schenn? He's old, his numbers are frankly terrible - he has neither goals, nor assists, nor hits, nor blocks, and he hasn't played anything even close to a full season in 3 years. Maybe I'm missing something? I've never really watched him play, but my take from watching the Bolts through these playoffs is that he's really not great and frankly, we can do better even at that price - though I'd be willing to do a short term contract at a couple hundred thou more than that. Like, why not see if DeMelo wants to come back to San Jose?

I don't think Pietrangelo stays in St Louis since it looks like the problem isn't term or salary but is about protection and bonuses, but yeah, Sundqvist would be a nice piece. i don't think he's someone the Blues want to move, especially not within conference, but I'd be fine with seeing him in teal.
