CAR TOR 3 way idea that needs tinkering

Created by: NHLfan10506
Team: 2020-21 New Jersey Devils
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 23, 2020
Published: Sep. 23, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I took some of the recent TOR and CAR deals and tried to add third team (NJD) with cap space...and think I ended helping TOR and CAR at NJD's expense. How could this be improved?

CAROLINA
Give: Pesce, Neiderreiter, Dzingle, Necas, 1st pick
Gets: Nylander, Palmieri (at $2.3 mi)
Salary: drops $4.2 million

TORONTO
Gives: Nylander, Liljegren
Gets: Pesce, Severson (at $3.8 mil)
Salary: Even

NEW JERSEY
Gives: Palmieri (+$2.3 mil), Severson (+$1.1mil), 3rd pick
Gets: Neiderreiter, Dzingle, Necas, Liljegren, 1st pick
Salary: goes up $4.2 million

Someone else should take a stab at this....see if you can improve

Don't think Carolina is getting enough back to balance what they are sending out, probably needs a little tweaking so they get a little more of a return. Toronto and NJ likely do it.

Anyone trying to pull Necas from Canes should put the keyboard down and go find something to do. They are just wasting their time. 🤷🏻‍♂️

CAR getting Robbed blind, Leafs not giving nearly enough, NJ getting way to much back

Best way to improve this would be to delete it

Leave Necas out completely and this makes a lot more sense. Devils need wingers to support their young centers. They get that in Dzingel and Nino. Also get a 1st in the deal. You don't get Necas for one year of Palmieri.

Nah the leafs are giving up and elite forward in Nylander, a good prospect in Liljgren who is better then Cal Foote based on his stats, and their first while getting two average top 4 defenceman in return. Maybe I would trade the first and Liljgren for one of them but there is no chance the leafs give up Nylander in that trade.

The responses here prove....that cap savings is rarely valued here

In other words, according to ACGM....
If.........Player A at $6 million = 2nd round pick
Than...Player A at $3 million = 2nd round pick

One can make an estimate of value of cap space by recent trades...

(a) Marleau ($6.25 mil) = 1st rounder
(b) Backes ($4.5 mil x 1.25 seasons = $5.6 mil) = 1st rounder
(c) Lehner ($1.4 mil x 0.25 season = $350k) = 5th rounder

Roughly...
$5m = 1st
$3-4m = 2nd
$2-3m = 3rd
$1-2m = 4th
<$1m = 5th

And that was before COVID....and what will likely be 3 years of flat-cap. So, $4.2 million in savings could easily be worth a 1st today.

And the flip side is - any team taking cap....(like NJD here)...should be compensated for that hit.

Here is what the trades would look like without balancing salary and picks:

CAROLINA (salary goes up $6.7 million)
Give: Pesce, Necas
Gets: Nylander, Palmieri

TORONTO (Salary goes up $365k)
Gives: Nylander, Liljegren
Gets: Pesce, Severson

NEW JERSEY (Salary goes down $7.1 million)
Gives: Palmieri, Severson
Gets: Necas, Liljegren

Car is giving up the 1st, Tor is getting a 3rd.

In a world without salary cap, maybe. But in this world, CAR getting more than you think, NJD is giving more than you think.

Dzingel and Nino are moved here for salary purposes. NJD wouldn't give more than late, late pick for either.

That is fair...maybe swap other pieces for him.

When considering the change in salary, CAR actually does quite well here.

They are getting two top-line wingers....hardly insane.

So then....
CAR gets two star wingers AND $4 million of cap space for Pesce+pick?
NJD gives $4 million, Severson, Palmieiri....for a few cap dumps and one pick?

C'mon.

How about Carolina and Toronto make a 1 for 1 trade with Pesce and Nylander. Absolutely no point in swapping Necas for Palmeiri as Necas will be the better player in 1-2 years. Simple

Nylander = Pesce
Palmieri = 1st Rd. Pick and Prospect.

Or in this case a 1st Rd. Pick and two very serviceable top 6 players that can help your youngsters progress. Dzingel in a contract year getting premium minutes could even net you a late 1st at the deadline or two 2nds and a prospect (see the Columbus trade from 18-19.) Nino same thing next deadline could net you even more picks for your rebuild. Think about this any more than surface level and it makes even more sense. C'MON!

Normally, Nylander > Pesce...only reason it is "=" is that Pesce is on a good contract.

And if no Necas, there is no prospect. So Canes get Palmieri and cap space, NJD just gets a pick and two overpaid wingers.
