Description
BEFORE YOU COMMENT "PiEtRaNgElO iSn'T gOnNa SiGn WiTh BuFfAlO" this is an arm-chair GM for fun so chill.

It was reported per the athletic and other sources pietrangelos negotiations with st.louis have halted. So this is the unlikely scenario he thinks buffalo is his future home.

It's reported he is wanting more than 8mil (that's what reportedly st.louis offered and he rejected to some extent, maybe he rejected on something to do with a signing bonus or NMC or whatever). So I sign him at 8.5 cause that's what we gotta hope for.

In this scenario, Vegas loses out on pietrangelo so they need to look at other defensive options, that's where the riso for Tuch trade comes in.

And with the cap, there have been rumors buffalo has an internal cap, but I was listening to GMKA talk recently and he said that he is not concerned with the cap and needs to bring in the right players to win a stanely cup so that's that in my mind. Im not good at this but hey whatever

goaltending would also need to be addressed for this roster but I don't have time today so ya, sign Khudobin idc

I think this is fair for both teams, Risto is still young and has great analytics, and I think a change of pace might help his game, vegas gets a first w/o lottery protection and we get a 2nd line rw. I don't know if the value is exact but I'd be willing to add if it's not enough idk

Risto retained... and a first... for Tuch, and you think its fair. Buffalo also has 0 interest in Pietrangelo other than appeasing an uninformed fan base. Sabres need to spend that money fixing the forward group, and theyll have to extend Dahlin and Jokiharju

I wouldn't be surprised if the Sabres make a strong push for Pietrangelo. It has been rumored that Uncle Terry has made it very well known to the Sabres front office that he wants him in the blue & gold. I imagine it would take 9+ million to land him here and I personally would prefer to save that kind of pay day for our Swede boy Rasmus Dahlin.

Ya near the end of putting this together I was like damn we wont be able to sign dahlin or Joki next season, but I was too far in to just delete it, unless they can find a way to trade okposo and get rid of the entire 6 mil or something there is no way to make Pietrangelo work here imo unless the NHL says **** it and bumps the cap to 85 mil for no reason lol

Tuch may not be worth that, but I think vegas likes him to much so we would probably have to give more than he's worth to get him. I am a wild fan and really liked his play when they drafted him, wanted him in a wild sweater and I think he could be great with the right development

Hes alright, Im not giving up that much for him though, I dont think hes worth a 1st alone, so that insinuates that Risto is a cap dump

He's not going to Buffalo for that contract. Especially for 5 years, and to Buffalo, he'd probably want 10+

TUCH is not worth that? Risto has basically negative value. That first rounder is not enough to make up for that and get Tuch on top of it.

Just food for thought, but the reported St. Louis deal that he turned down was $8M for 8 years. We could only offer 7 years, so I'd imagine the AAV would have to be close to 10.

Come on, Risto does not have negative value. Let's not get rediculous. Even his poor analytics are being seriously overblown, they really aren't that bad.

You're probably right, but he certainly doesn't have a ton of value. With his high cap hit, length of contract and really poor results though, you're not sending him anywhere that wants to win. I would be livid if the Leafs got him.

Analytics are overblown, were already seeing a push back in the NHL. Its useful but not to the extent previously imagined

Their was something about not letting him see the terms of the contract though that he was not cool with

It's not even that they're overblown, it's just that they're limited at this point. At least the publicly available advanced stats.

The problem is that when you're looking to make a model to predict performance, you can only be as good as the inputs into that model. And the only inputs we really have to work with right now are shots. That's why Corsi/Fenwick/etc are driven by shot data, it's all we really have to work with. The expected goals model improves on this by trying to factor in shot quality, but even that is a very rudimentary measure.

It will be very interesting to see what new metrics pop up in the next few years due to the NHL finally starting to implement on-ice player tracking. That will vastly expand the data we have to work with, and I'd imagine we'll get some new advanced stats that blow what we have today out of the water.

I think the majority of the problem is hockey is not an individualist sport like baseball and to an extent football and arguably basketball. Someone on paper can have great underlying stats with a specific line in one team, but come into another team to a line where they all have great numbers but dont mesh. Immeasurables are definitely a thing in hockey more so than any other sport, aside maybe soccer

Agreed. It's also much easier to gather quantifiable data in a sport like football or baseball that has specific events or plays that can be collectively compared to each other. Much more difficult in a fluid sport like hockey.

He turned down the STL offer bc they would not tell him how the contract was structured

I don't necessarily believe that. I think Pietrangelo and the Blues disagree on how the contract should be structured, and maybe the Blues want him to agree to a number before talking structure. That organization is notorious for trying to avoid paying out bonuses, so that is likely the holdup.

But not telling him how the contract is structured? That doesn't make any sense. If they've truly made a contract offer, that contract would be in Pietrangelo's hands to read through.

Sept. 18
With sources confirmed that the Blues and Alex Pietrangelo ended contract talks and the team told the defenseman to pursue free agency, Pietrangelo told The Athletic that he believes he’s headed to the market, but he has not ruled out a deal with the Blues. “No, not at all,” he said. The Blues’ current offer is $7.7 million AAV, but Pietrangelo said that the Blues have not made him aware of the structure of the deal..

Sept. 22
The Blues’ latest offer is believed to be eight years at $8 million per season, which sources say is less than Alex Pietrangelo is willing to accept. But what has also contributed to the two sides being unable to find common ground is that the captain’s camp still wants to know the structure of the contract — specifically, whether it will include buyout protection in the form of a signing bonus at the end of the deal and a no-movement clause.

To me, that reads like the Blues want him to agree to a number before talking structure, and Pietrangelo isn't about that.

No way that the Blues expect him to sign a contract with out knowing the structure. They likely haven't presented a formal contract offer yet, they're just negotiating at this point.
