Alex Pietrangelo originally signs in LA at 8.8x6.
He is then flip to TOR at $2mil retained as per an agreement when deal is signed.

Highly doubt LA would even consider doing this but they have tons of cap space and would get a lot in return.

Creative...but I wouldn't want my team carrying $2m cap hit for 6 years.

100% cap circumvention and I can guarantee the league would come down hard on this. Probably void the contract and fine both teams draft picks. Not to mention LA doesn't want that cap hit for when they actually will be competitive.

I like the creativity. He would only be able to sign for 7 years. I never thought of this type of deal before, but i think that would be tough to eat 2M on the cap for 8 years. I wonder if a team like Ottawa/PHX or one of these low budget teams would do something like this tho (not necessarily Petro) but to allow them to get to the floor. For example, Sens sign a player, flip him to leafs and retain salary but its a front loaded contract that is paid by the leafs...

I would love for someone who knows more about the CBA to explain if that's allowed or possible.

There’s a difference between creativity and just robbing people.

I also wonder if it would be technically possible for this situation to happen but instead of LA retaining $2mil, OTT and LA each retain $1mil. Would definitely be interesting

Creative but still leaves the Leafs as an extremely soft team
