Could They Target Marcus Pettersson

Created by: AnalyticsGeek
Team: 2020-21 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 23, 2020
Published: Sep. 23, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
The Penguins acquiring Mike Matheson could mean that they are making Marcus Pettersson expendable for trade. IMO the Leafs should pounce on it, he is a very solid two-way defenceman, kinda like Jake Muzzin. I'd also try to get Bryan Rust in a deal as well.

Could you explain to me why it’s a bad trade? Maybe the Leafs don’t want to give up such a high pick? I feel the value is pretty close.

Rust is 28, kinda going all in on a, to this point in time, fluke season

It's not close, Petterson is probably an average defender maybe a TINY bit better than average, rust did have a good season but it may just be a flash in the pan type thing he is to much of an uncertain when talking about trading for a superstar like marner and then there is the retention which is a no no and we give up a first. It's wrong on a few levels

If you had this nice shiny ripe apple and fresh banana would you trade for two apples that may have a bruise or two?

You're underrating the value of Marner.
He is a superstar. You can't replace players like that.

Rust is a good player, but also just had a career year. Historically is a 3rd liner or a fringe 2nd liner.

A better analogy might be: Would you rather have a Lambo or a really nice mountain bike and an electric scooter?

Yeah but as long as he plays alongside an elite center man, he’ll keep that production up until his 30s. He’s also a really clutch player, always shows up in big games. At 3.5 Million it’s a steal.

What are you using to base the opinion that Pettersson is average? I watch him pretty consistently & he seems like a solid top 4 defender. Just a really smart player who uses his reach to get good body positioning over the attacker and anticipates the play well. His stats were really good as well.

Rust will score a point per game if he’s playing with an elite center. He is fast and forecheck aggressively. A beast in the playoffs. Leafs need those type of guys.
