Description
LOL. What’s harder to do: evaluate Laine’s value in a cap strapped world or the 2nd overall pick? Either way, the Jets get a potential game changing pick and a nice piece for the middle 6 and the Kings “roll the dice” on a guy with 50 Goal potential. For those who think this is a low ball offer, consider it a conversation starter

Not worth it for LA. I’d rather one of Stutzle/Byfield over Laine

It doesn't address any needs for Winnipeg, so I think the Jets say no.

Kings pass, we want it to be a few years before we start having guys in their early 20s demanding 10M per year.

I think the jets have to do that. Laine has never totally worked and there has been noise the last several years. To get the 2nd pick and other assets is probably the best offer they will get

I’d throw in Kupari too, but that’s just because he’s my least favorite of their center prospects. I’d want to downgrade that 2nd rounder to a 3rd though if I threw in another prospect.

I can understand that. I really like the prospects, but if the Kings were tempted to do a quick turnaround, it might make sense moving Kempe and picks for 30-40 goals a year for several years starting now

Oh 1000% that trade would be a yes and thank you.

The trade should be

Winnipeg Jets

Laine

Los Angeles Kings

2020 1ST 2OA

if they wanted to trade the pick that bad. Plus Id would be willing to say Jets need to add

Zero chance the Jets would consider this deal, Laine won't be traded for that low of a return.

LOWW?!?!?! QB is a low return? I know he's unproven. But one thing from watching Laine these last couple of years I find he's a lil too inconsistent and imo has shown lack luster effort for a 9+ mill player. Either way I understand your pov as the jets would need players to compete now in return. But man you couldn't sell me on adding if I was the kings. Its just an unfortunate null and void.

QB has top 10 center written all over him in my opinion, Laine is probably the 4th most important player on the team, there is no way L.A. would even offer that but if they did the Jets would really be dumb not to accept that

It's just too big a gamble for the Jets to take. I know most people, as you are doing here, greatly exaggerate the impact of the shiny new toy, but only 6 other players in hockey history have scored at Laine's rate for his age, so the chance of anyone of this draft class matching that are pretty slim.

However, you do have a good point about contracts, even though you are repeating tired, meaningless memes from two seasons ago about inconsistency and lack luster effort for a player that was on an almost point per game pace this season.

Unfortunately, I don't think the deal would meet either teams needs.

Its only been 2 years since the rebuild started, 2 more and it'll be over. No point in doing this. Kings literally need 2 top 6 wingers and a 2RD and the rebuild is over. Assuming Turcotte, Kaliyev, and Stutzle/Byfield pan out.

I don’t want LA to rush things because having the best prospect pool in the league means options down the line. They can afford to be patient if guys like Kupari or Clague don’t materialize into anything beyond depth pieces. This is just my idea of what it would take to get Laine. “Slam dunk” 30-40 goal seasons like clockwork are hard to come by and would be costly, especially when a guy is in his early 20’s. It all comes down to if you want to pay this price. I’d be hesitant to trade away the 2nd pick in any blockbuster package, but I believe this is the price for the Kings to get Laine and they have the assets to justify it.

Mike Hoffman scores almost as much and he can be had in Free Agency while giving up 0 assets. Kaliyev who has the same ceiling if not higher than Hoffman will be ready in 2 years if that if he pans out. Hopefully Kings get Reichel at 35OA. Kings are fine. Laine is going to want 4M more than what he's worth anyway when that contract is over
