The underrated Toews

Created by: Anus_McLeod
Team: 2020-21 Colorado Avalanche
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 18, 2020
Published: Sep. 23, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
It's not likely to happen, but figured I'd throw it out there anyway. With Barzal and Pulock, is it possible the Isles just have to throw their hands in the air and let Toews go in such a scenario? They could probably make it work, but the question is would it be worth it.

This doesn't even have to be Colorado specific. Just wondering if folks think Toews can be had via os. He's worth a second and decent money.

I think both get carried by the other equally. They both have their absolutely disgusting moments

Mayfield is one of the worst puck movers in the NHL, he struggles to evade pressure , and he’s not physical for a guy who’s 6’5. Toews is the best puck moving D on the isles and it’s not close. He’s not replaceable

Is it because both picks are 2020 or that you feel he's being overvalued?

Regardless of value in the deal, I think Graves would actually be a very solid pickup for DET -- Graves, Seider, Hronek, Cholowski is the start of a young and potentially very good defensive core. And then add one of Johansson or McIsaac if either of them pan out (or even Drysdale if they select him) and the DET defensive core looks solid for the future.

Yeah I don't what to give any picks up this year and I also think graves is good, but plays better on a stacked avs team and don't think his game would translate the same to the wings. Would rather have zadarov similar type of player. I'd give up wash 2nd this year and Vegas 3rd in 2021.

When toews isn’t clicking, he’s horrendous. When he is, he looks like the best defenseman on the team. He just looks terrified of making a mistake and thus makes mistakes

Toews wasn’t good during this playoff run, but he’s a core piece and like I said, not replaceable. He had a good regular season for the most part and he was a big reason why the isles were even able to stay in the playoff hunt with pelech gone. He’s the isles best offensive defenseman is his defensive impact isn’t far behind pelech

I’m gonna have to disagree with that part about his defensive impact being just less than Pelech‘s and probably the part about his replaceability but he’s definitely a guy worth keeping around which is why they’ll match that sheet

They were looking at Hjalmarsson. Toews would be a short term play as well. He'd go to Seattle or walk after a couple years. Well worth a 2nd (imo).

I don't think you move for a guy as good as Toews and then plan to lose him, thats just bad asset management.

At least with HJ he is only signed for 1 more year

What pelech does is more noticeable to the causal fans eye, but toews hockey IQ in the defensive zone is great - he doesn’t get get enough credit For how solid he is defensively. His gap control is borderline elite and he does a great job keeping forwards to the outside.

Leddy has to go even if toews is traded, so which two D would be on the 2nd pairing?

I would argue that paying less in both trade compensation and AAV for a better player is actually good asset management. Not to mention that losing Toews means Compher or whoever else would have gone to Seattle no longer does. It's a straight win.

Hj would certainly be cheaper and term is all that matters.

Also the Avs WANT SEA to take Compher to clear his contract off the books

I doubt he'd be much cheaper (if at all). I actually bet he'd cost at least a 2nd.

Compher still has value too. If the team wants his contract off the books then they can trade him. Lots of teams will want to plug a hole after Seattle raids their roster. Saying the Avs want Seattle to take JT is mostly because it's the best outcome. What if it isn't though...
