I think for a Jarry contract have that kind of cap hit, it would have to be longer term. Also, two years takes him right to UFA. One year would give you an RFA year.

Also, Mathewson is not a top four defenseman. Pettersson, is.

Paying Tanev 5 mil to be on your bottom pairing is a terrible use of cap space.

I know Pettersson is, but we would have to move someone out or play JJ/Matheson on weak side. I dont want to pay a bottom pairing guy that much, but that is what is being said ATM.. Jarry contract could be fixed.

Seems like it eh :/ I hope Matheson could pick his game up. He had some really good seasons; that contract just scares me though.

Kings say no. They don't need Petterson. They're looking for a veteran LHD with experience to provide some mentoring and leadership for guys like Clague and Anderson. A 24-year old defenseman with less than 200 NHL games doesn't help.

They do need Lizotte. Right now, their 3C/4C are Lizotte and Amadio. The latter is already a replacement-level player that the Kings will be looking to move on from once JAD can make the jump to the NHL. They'll have to wait for guys like Turcotte, Byfield, and Madden to be NHL ready before they can move on from both of them.

The Kings aren't going to trade any 2nd round picks unless it's to move up in the draft.

You know, you could always just not play Jack Johnson? Or make a stupid Tanev signing? Just use Ruhwedel.

If I was GM, sure. That's not the case though. This is what is being mentioned in the media so I am trying to be as realistic as I can.

I would point out that the same source that thinks they are signing Tanev are the same ones that said that the team wasn't going to spend to to the cap and literally yesterday reported that they played to keep Hornqvist and wouldn't ask him to waive his NTC. Yohe is kind of a joke. Also worth pointing out that DK (who also kind sucks but whatever) refuted the Tanev and cap stuff and said it was false.

Bernstein has apparently forgotten Blake's interviews from last season's trade deadline, where he explicitly stated that he's looking for a veteran LHD with leadership experience. Additionally, Petterson requires expansion draft protection, meaning that they won't be able to protect Kale Clague. That trade would make 0 sense.

The Kings need a veteran LHD with ideally 2 years remaining on his deal. That player should have extensive playoff experience and be capable of playing top pairing minutes. Additionally that player should be one that they're comfortable leaving exposed in the expansion draft.

Long term, the Kings are set at LHD. They have Bjornfot, Anderson, Clague, MacDermid, and Hults all NHL ready or very close to making the jump to the NHL. They just need someone to step in for the short term so they don't have three rookies on the left side all at the same time.

They dont have to protect Pettersson, but it would not make sense to not protect him. Kale Clague should definitely get some games, but is not proven just yet. Gonna be hard to find a top pairing guy who you will be unprotected at the expansion draft. I see your point on the prospects though. I just found it interesting how he tweeted this after I thought of it yesterday. You never know, just found it cool.

Nick Leddy is the obvious choice. Can play big minutes. Has two seasons remaining on his deal. Has over 100 games of playoff experience. Can be acquired for minimal return given New York's cap situation. The Kings wouldn't protect him in the expansion draft.
