Isles Cap Crunch

Created by: Apollo2195
Team: 2020-21 New York Islanders
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 24, 2020
Published: Sep. 24, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Trying to stay fair on each trade.

LA - Gets Leddy for taking Komorov and gets to move up 3 rounds in the draft as a bonus.

MIN - Made money close to equal (Isles get better player but Parise is signed for 5 MORE YEARS) Minnesota gets two late round picks to help start rebuild and Hickey is a competent 5,6,7 Dman.

Detroit - Will be the most controversial, however, Bellows and Aho will be NHL players and Boychuk is not cooked. Get two longer term young players in exchange for taking boychuk. If you really want the 1st Rounder in 2021 an entire new deal will have to be drawn up or we go to Ottawa instead.

TOR - Just two disgruntled players flipped.

I don't think you need to retain salary on Komarov or send over the 3rd. Kings have use for Leddy and don't need the cap space. Leddy isn't a dump, so taking Komarov's contract is a way to mitigate the pick they'd have to send back.

Apparently the wild won’t trade parise unless they get a 1st - and if we’re giving up a 1st they would have to retain 50% (which they won’t do) so that’s why Parise to NYI is likely dead

Yet another of the Boychuk to Detroit trades. Please think about this from Detroit's perspective (not the Isle dumping the contract on anyone with room without including draft picks)....Detroit is rebuilding...why do they take on a soon to be 37 year old d-man at 6M x2 who has declined significantly? And for only a 3rd rounder and only C and B prospects?

Easy pass. Next team that needs cap space choose from STL: Steen, CHI: Smith, Maatta, ANH: Backes, BUF: Hutton, MIN: Dubnyk, FLA: Straman, VAN: Beagle, Baertschi, Eriksson, or LA: Carter. Plenty of teams need cap space for a flat cap and internal ownership cap.

Why exactly does LA need to get rid of Carter? They're currently sitting on $16.5M in cap space, and only owe $44M in actual cash salary this season. Their owner is worth $10 billion. Carter's salary is only $2M in each of his last two seasons. If a team wants Carter, they're welcome to take him, but the Kings are perfectly content to let him finish out his contract in LA.

Roster spot for Turcotte, Rasmus Kupari, or an UFA. Pretty sure no NCAA hockey---no money to be made on it like football.

but way to nitpick about 1 of 11 names rattled of the top of my head.

Turcotte has already signed his ELC, he is no longer eligible for the NCAA. He will be playing in Ontario next season, as he is not NHL ready.

Kupari is also not ready. He only had 30ish professional games under his belt before missing the rest of the season from his WJC injury. He'll need another full season in the AHL before he's ready to take a spot in the NHL.

Regardless, the Kings have already decided to move Carter to the wing. He's no longer going to play center on the Kings. The other RW options are Brown, Frk, and Wagner. The next closest to NHL ready option is Arthur Kaliyev, and he's still at least a full season away from the NHL.

Pick on my team and I'll nitpick right back.

I'd want at least a 2nd to take Komarov and I'd only give a 5th for Leddy unretained.

If you take Komarov and Leddy for free your essentially paying Leddy 7.5Mx2 which isn't a positive asset.

Wings will ask for a 3rd in 2022 to be added to the deal and then send you back erne and then it's good to go.

Anaheim doesn't need to move Backes. He only costs us $2.5 million in actual cash this season and once Ryan Kesler gets shifted from IR to LTIR, we'll have $7 million in cap space with only a backup goalie and 14th forward to add to the roster.

For the Wings trade, I’d prefer the trade to include the 1st with maybe a 3rd/4th included. For the current trade you proposed, I’d probably ask for the 3rd to be upgraded to a 2nd.

God I hate these Parise deals, nothing personal to the OP but a fair deal for Parise would be Parise and 1st for Ladd and Boychuk maybe a low to mid pick.

Parise 5 years at 7.85 million, a guy who has zero upside left in him. He's headed in the other direction.

Ladd 3 years at 5.5 million pretty much a minor league winger and emergency call up.

Boychuk 2 years at 6 million an average defenseman with declining skills, but can still play.

Ladd is worthless, but on a 3 year deal Parise is on a 5 year deal, they need to take Boychuk who's off the books in 2 years and we'll agree to Parise's worst years likely year 3 through 5. If not sooner.

The 1st coming the Islanders way is insurance that we place Parise on the LTIR when he calls it quits and eat his salary rather than letting him retire out right and laughing as Minnesota pays 19.6 million in cap recapture penalties.

Now I know Minnesota fans won't agree I apologize, but I really don't care. He's not worth as much as you think at his age and with his declining skills.
