Created by: yikes
Team: 2020-21 San Jose Sharks
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 24, 2020
Published: Sep. 24, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Meier: 4 years younger - an RFA once expired - never achieved the same production gaudreau has (100points), but still much younger - gritty and has performed in the playoffs, similar style of Tkachuk; big body presence and strong

Gaudreau: 4 years older but has a better resume, but struggled recently (not saying Meier hasn’t) - UFA in 2 years hoping the sharks would resign - hasn’t performed in the playoffs but has proven his worth in the past

I think the Flames would be thrilled with that type of return

Calgary absolutely needs to add! Meier's been consistently getting better and better, is physically dominant and gets to the gritty areas, is only 23, while Gaudreau, while very talented, has been progressively getting worse and is 27.

One down season is progressively worse - give your head a shake to remover the Homer you have lodged in there. Meier has one season above 50 points. Johnny has one below 60.

Well Meier struggled this past year and honestly didn’t look right at times but his Qualifying offer is like 10 mil so he comes with his downsides as well. I really don’t know who would add, I believe Calgary would need to but then again I also can easily see why the sharks would need to add in Calgary’s POV

Elaborate on why Calgary would be thrilled about this. What micro, macro, or eye test stats indicate AT ALL, that Meier is worth Johnny?

A 23yr old RW that can score you a minimum of 20 and plays with an edge. There's also cost certainty, you get him for 3 seasons at 6 and after that he's still an RFA, so worst case scenario you get 4 years of control. The Flames can keep Gaudreau, whatever the value is now, it drops once the puck drops in 20/21. He says he would stay in CGY his whole career, maybe that's true, but there have been rumblings he wasn't happy with his last negotation. He will demand 9+ from the Flames to stay. Maybe I'm an idiot, but I'd rather have a 25yr old making 6 than an undersized forward in his 30's making close to double digits in a relatively flat cap world.

Both teams play in the west, against STL, VGK, etc. I want a highly-skilled physically-dominant top-line forward who is still growing/learning and plays the game hard at age 23, and who's shown this in the playoffs, over a 5'-9, 150lb -- though very talented -- forward who nonetheless isn't that much more talented over Timo to justify the other pros that Timo has over Johnny.

I think the Calgary trade is close. Maybe not the best idea, but value wise, I think it's about there.

I'd honestly stay away from Galchenyuk, Ho-Sang and Clifford though...

Keep in mind that Timo can either accept a (potentially much) lower cap hit than the 10mil QO or simply test it in FA and if he doesn't get that (he won't), choose to resign with SJ at a much lower cap hit. I personally don't find that commonly cited reason as that big a con as it's made out to me, but I can appreciate you trying to consider both perspectives.

Clifford's the one guy out of those three I'd consider at the right price.

Ya because no diminutive skilled forward has ever had a ton of success. True the value of a big body is important but it also means a shorter career and more injury-prone.

Rumblings from who? Meier is due for a huge payrise the year after Johnny. Physical guys have shorter careers on average and fall of a cliff a lot quicker than pure skill guys.

Hmm I'm pretty you should elaborate on why you wasted a comment space just to call someone an idiot in an interesting discussion instead of simply asking this question from the get-go...

Because I think it is a bad trade that would be the result of a management team panicking and pulling the trigger like the Flames have done so often in the past that have lead to acquiring goodish, but decreasing return players.

Any fan of Calgary has seen this song and dance enough to know that it would be a mistake.

Fair enough. I definitely think he's the least risky of the three, but imo there are better players out there at a better pricepoint.

This isn’t Johnny Gaudreau for Milan Lucic. Meier is 23, like I said you get 3 years of control. After that he’s an RFA with arb rights, you have the option to do a long term deal on a 26 year old player. A decline for Meier isn’t happening until he’s in his 30’s. You’d be getting 7-10 really solid seasons out of him.

Not sure what more you could ask for in a Gaudreau deal

A 10M baseline for Arbitration... ya that sounds like a heck of a deal for a 60 point guy AT BEST.

You think Timo Meier has peaked? He's a 60pt player at 23, he's not a finished product. By the way, Gaudreau had 61pts in his age 23 season.

In a shortened season with a missed camp - as we have seen from many players missing camp reduced output. Look at the seasons surrounding it.

I did not say he has peaked, as he probably can learn more defensive skills, but he has not really shown anything special outside of 1 season. also not that it really matters but 9 of his points came in a 5 game period.
