You get back Jost at the deadline, Lafreniere playing with Zibanejad is not unheard of. Heck sign someone cheaper.

What's the point in having the extra cap space this season?
Cap space doesn't win games, it doesn't score points, it's not a dangerous net front presence, and it isn't one of the fastest skaters in the league.
Having depth is going to make his matchups even better, or take pressure away from Lafreniere. It's a net positive to have CK on the team.

You say that now but Kreider's contract is run through ELC's of young stars like Kakko, Fox, Shesterkin, Kravtsov, Miller, Lundkvist, Pajuniemi, Robertson, Jones, Georgiev, and Lafreniere. You really think Kreider sitting at $6.5M, 30+ years old, is valuable? I'd rather anyone on a cheaper and short term deal. Who cares. This contract is a slap in the face.

It’s true we’re probably not doing anything but it honestly kinda pisses me off. I understand the idea behind being conservative but is a team with Strome/Chytil/Howden down the middle and Lindgren/Staal/Smith on the left side D even a playoff team. And it’s not like there’s not moves we can make and still preserve financial flexibility going forward.
