Description
Burnside sees Krug/Shattenkirk/Barrie as potential targets for the Isles. Krug's contract was estimated to be about 7.25x5 by The Athletic. Would be tight, but could work if the Boychuk and Leddy trades work out. And before people go "tHeY woUldNt dO thAt dEaL" re: Boychuk, it's flexible. Isles still have other picks/prospects they can add. And with the salary retention, it's not terrible.

Wings have plenty of cap space so retaining on boychuck does nothing to add to the value. It's boychuck + wilde + 2021 1st for erne

Anaheim calls Detroit and raises with Max Jones for Boychuk (with retention), Wilde and the 2021 first. See Kase for Backes.

Sure dude how in the hell can you afford to give Krug 6 x $7,500,000 with Barzal and Pulock needing new deals? Barzal will come in at around $9m per and Pulock at $6m or $6.5m per you'd need to move out a lot of bodies Krug isn't wasting his time in New York doubt Detroit has any interest in Boychuk either.

Isles organization itself has said for awhile they need scoring help and won’t stop talking about how great their defense is. If the Isles get 7.5m in cap space, they’ll look for Barzal’s winger. And all this hinges on Ladd going to LTIR, and while I think at least one Islander ends up on LTIR, we can’t COUNT on it happening. I get you’re just entertaining someone else’s idea here, but I disagree with that idea.

With Pulock, Mayfield and Dobson on the right side, I can't see Shattenkirk or Barrie. Krug is way too rich for our blood and also somewhat superfluous, although I do like his game on the power play.

My hope is that Isles management is more concerned with keeping Barzal, Pulock and Toews before going out and getting new guys, especially guys we don't really need like Barrie or will be way too expensive like Krug. Besides, our biggest needs are at forward anyways. If we somehow do have the means to spend big in free agency, I'd rather get a guy like Evgeny Dadonov or Craig Smith rather than another defenseman

The numbers are directly taken from Arthur Staple's guesses in his recent Athletic Q&A, but go off.

I would do this for sure.

I would probably do this more but only problem is retention. If we had the choice between this and the Red Wings deal, I'd take the Red Wings deal to not be locked into retention.

Given COVID and what the RFAs dealt with last season, I think Barzal signs a two or three-year bridge deal. Pulock yes will sign at that cap hit.

Doubtful Ladd ends up on LTIR after playing in Game 2 of the ECF.

I'd sign Barrie if Pulock is traded for a scorer like Connor or Laine.

Mayfield is pretty moveable if need be, but I generally agree. While I would love another winger, I don't think it's as crucial as getting a top tier puck moving D-man. It's why Tampa walked over us most of the time. I don't think 7.25 is extreme by any means and players like him don't generally decline as quickly as other positions. There were so many wasted PPs in the Tampa series and throughout the season, and a new coach did nothing to change it.

Toews is a better puck mover than all 3 of the defenseman burnside listed

People don’t realize that any defenseman that comes to the isles will see their numbers take a hit.

Krug would be an upgrade on the powerplay, but he wont have a Pasternak or a Marchand, so will he be as effective and put up as many points. Most likely not . Add to the fact that he’ll be 30 and on the decline, it’s not worth it.

Just out of curiosity why would a team trade for Krug? Boston is either going to resign him or let him walk. I don't know for sure because of everything is smooshed together but the season is over when someone wins the cup and Krug's contract is done. Now until free agency begins he can only sign with Boston. The majority of the hockey world thinks he is going to be signed for more than he should be. So why in the world would Boston sign Krug just to flip him raising the cost of Krug even higher.
