Nobody honestly knows. They don't need the cap space, they need guys to play for them, and they aren't going to be good for a couple years anyway. Really bad look on the team. Now they get saddled with him on the cap for 4 years instead of 2.

everybody knows - Its to save money. Just because they have cap space doesnt mean they want to spend it

They have to get to the floor still. Nobody is lining up to play in Ottawa and they don't have a bunch of players in need of raises.

I get that, but they would need to do that 3-4 times on really toxic contracts. It leaves too much work left. Optically this is also terrible with Ryan coming off a Masterton Trophy.

Yeah its definitely bad for PR, but I think they will save money because of it. If they can get some contracts like Zetterberg, Hossa, Luongo, and/or active players like Dubnyk, Steen, etc who have high cap hits and low salary then I think they will end up saving money

LeBrun on Twitter " Sens view the Bobby Ryan decision mostly as a hockey decision, wanting to open up a roster spot for younger players. Also wanted to give Ryan a fresh start. Sens have nothing but good things to say about him. But the Sens felt it was good for both sides to part ways. "

That and the Melnyk part. He was overpaid anyways and he'll likely play for a better team.

Ryan with his current contract is untradeable, now he can go sign with a contending team to try and win a cup, its a win win for both sides, and i guarantee they talked to him about this.

Blues can move steen who makes 3.5m and has a 5.75m cap hit. One move and they are close to Ryan’s 7.5m hit.

They will find easy cap dumps, they do it every year
