Considering there is no clause and this AAV, I think it is a good move by MB. It is also making Petry a prime candidate for Seattle if his performance do not meet the expectations.

What I really don't like is that our top-2 D are getting old... really old frown

dont worr we got guys like Mete, Romanov, Brook, Fleury, and Strubble developing well

Edmundson had a bad year he could bounce back but I aint convinced enough to say he is a top 4 guy. Chiarot is but I think he is going to regress from this point on.

I guess we have different opinions but Chiarot was so consistent that I don't think he's going to regress. Maybe a bit but not enough to be concerned.

I agree with that I just think dman 30+ regress and sometimes fall off a cliff example: Marc Edouard Vlasic. However someone like Chiarot will be alright for years to come

bruh im a habs fan its just that MB hasn't been hitting any of his moves lately Edmundson's deal was a joke and now this bs.

According to Capfriendly threads, MB hasn't made a good move since he became GM in 2012

I agree I just want Weise for Grit purposes and I want Folin just as a minor league filler

Wasn't Weise confirmed to sign with a Swiss team like 2 months ago? i feel like their are better option on the team

There's a 15 Trade Clause and a full NMC

Fair AAV, too much term. I would have preferred 3 years as he'll be 34 when it kicks in

If you give him only 3 years, odds are he'd be asking for a higher AAV. More term = more reasonable cap hit.

Yes they regress but then look at guys like Giordano/Chara/Weber/Suter who can play well into their 30's. Defensemen rely more on their IQ and passing skills which doesn't really regress. They don't need speed to play their position.

He's made more good trades than bad trades. The only obvious bad trade was Drouin for Sergechev but it's not like Sergechev became an Elite defensemen.

AAV probably accurate, feel age will be factor in later years.

Not terrible unlike that Edmundson deal.

Ouch. The inevitable decline will probably begin when this deal begins.

He peaked late so he's likely to regress late.

Im happy with it. I would have prefered higher cap but one less year of term but its not worth losing sleep over. Petry has been borderline top pairing for us. Yeah hes getting old but his foot speed is still great. Had it showed signs of decline, i might be a little worried.

Even if he declines a bit, he'll still be a top 4 and considering UFAs arent lining up to sign in MTL, this is more than fair. What was the other option? Play Noah Juulsen instead? Sign Pietrangelo?

There werent any other realistic options for the Habs and resigning good players who WANT to stay should be paramount for the Habs. Its hard enough to get them here in the first place.

Good enough to beat the Pens

Pens beat themselves. Worst series they’ve ever played.

Petro said no to 8x8 so I imagine he wants even more on a 7 year deal. They aren't comparable. You don't be competitive by continuing to sell your veterans for picks and prospects. Ask Buffalo

But habs also have other good players to ease the transition to a youth roster. I’m just saying they could’ve gotten a really good return for Petry

Who do we have at RHD that proves they can play consistantly in the top 6 let alone the top 4 and top 2 when needed? We have nobody close to Petry

He didn't start playing hard minutes until he was 30 and never had any major injuries. His body has almost 0 wear and tear. It's pretty obvious

A lot of people are complaining about the term. Four years with a low AAV compared to what people predicted is a home run for a vet that can develop our young guns while putting up points and provide leadership in the room. I love this dude, and hope he retires a Hab

Perfectly said. Even if Petry ends up a bit overpaid in the 4th year, him being underpaid this year and the next certainly makes up for it. And he’s too important of a player to lose to free agency.

Very good signing. The term is a bit longer than you'd like but that's expected for high end defensive talent.
