If you got Laine, I think you would need to trade Gaudreau as well - PHI being a very good option. You could recoup your defenseman (Hanifin/Andersson) lost in the WPG trade by snagging Sanheim or Myers and get a young center to eventually fill the gap Monahan leaves (Frost) -- plus likely recouping a pick or two which were also lost in the WPG deal.

I think the players association believes it will be easier for rental players to be traded and still go to FA to try for their big payday. Since neither team can put conditions like that on a trade anymore.
