Marner without Ekblad

Created by: Eli
Team: 2020-21 Florida Panthers
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 26, 2020
Published: Sep. 26, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I'm a Caps fan. Not sure who wins each of these. Hopefully both teams?

If the Panthers flip Marner before July, they save $5M in cash on that deal, while getting the best and 3rd best player in a four player trade. Toronto should consider it because they need cap space to sign Pietrangelo, and they have Nylander to play 1R.

Florida could save its money in the bank off this deal and leave the roster as-is, but I figured they could also use it to keep two of their departing UFA's, or sign equivalent guys off the open market.

I think a goalie controversy could get Bobrovsky motivated to play his best, and if Andersen is also playing for a contract, this team is a contender.

Trades

FLA
  1. Andersen, Frederik
  2. Marner, Mitchell
Additional Details:
Combined total salary this year of $1.75M. Then Andersen is UFA, and Marner can be traded before July for a fair amount of stuff, or just kept if he's producing. Toronto save $6.4M of cap space this year to sign Pietrangelo, and gets the 1L they need.
TOR
  1. Connolly, Brett
  2. Huberdeau, Jonathan
Additional Details:
Total combined salary of $6.8M this year. Florida saves $5.05M of actual money if they trade Marner before July. That's risky, if they're not sure what they can trade him for, next Spring, but the benefits of saving money, getting the best player in the deal, and getting to borrow a top goalie might outweigh it.

Marner > Huberdeau Connolly IMO
Stralman vs Kempny + Hagelin could be interesting but Priskie isn't getting traded

No from Florida. They have no need for Andersen and Huberdeau is better than Marner

Florida wins both trades. They get the youngest and best established NHLer in each trade, in Marner and Kempny. Yes, Stralman at 30 was better than Kempny, but Kempny at 30 now is a tiny bit better than Stralman at 34, and half the price. They're going to have to sweeten them. I wasn't sure how much. As a Caps fan I put the worst deal that I think WSH might consider.

Marner and Huberdeau each have one 90 point season. Marner at 24 is younger and more valuable than Huberdeau at 27, but clearing $6.4M in cap and signing Pietrangelo is the main return for Toronto.

Huberdeau gets 70-80 points a year at 1L with Matthews and Nylander. Pietrangelo solidifies the Leafs' defense for a while and makes them a bit more of a contender. Are there other ways they can cut costs and add Pietrangelo? Sure. But Marner's cap hit makes it challenging. If they don't want Connolly at 2R, they can easily give him away for more cap space. Do you think Fla has to keep Connolly and give up Acciari to sell this to Toronto? That give Tor even more cap space. But it means Fla only gets to keep one of the two UFAs above.

Wasn't the rumor that he left because his agent told him he should find a place where he could play right away, in the NHL, and Carolina claimed they were that spot, but didn't give him a chance?

If he hits free agency again, he'll remember who was honest with him. I think the Caps could use him this year as a #6/7, to play about 40-50 games.

He more than likely would be in the NHL this year with the capitals

Yep. And that might be even more fun than being a #6-7 with the Panthers.
