Fair trade. The Rangers get $5.7 million in cap space, and don’t give up anything major. The Red Wings get another good pick for taking on cap that they wouldn’t have used anyways.

Also this means that Marc Staal waived his NMC to go to Detroit. Either he wants to have a bigger role on another team, or this might mean he’s getting bought out.

If they acquire Seabrook, we might finally see some good traffic direction in Detroit. Those two would form a super pair.

Easy Wings win. When your team is in their position, the best way to move forward is to make these moves. Staal may be a brutal defenseman but getting a 2nd back is a great deal for em. NYR probably threatened a buy out to have him agree to the NMC-waive. $20M in cap room!

Marc was awesome for the Rangers for so many years. Gonna miss him. It's gonna be weird to see him in a Red Wings uniform.

Rangers get much needed cap relief and the Wings get a veteran leader on the back-end and get a 2nd to take on his contract. Good deal for both teams.

NYR saved huge amount of cap without giving up anything too significant.

I'll say they won the trade.

Usually cap dumps include another player going to the team getting rid of the bad contract just so that it doesn't look like a cap dump lol ... I noticed the same thing when Marleau got traded last year.

Good deal, though, for both teams. We needed to get rid of his cap hit ... Detroit, meanwhile, gets an experienced d-man who is still useful plus a 2nd rounder.

A lot less payment than people anticipated. Good deal for both squads. Curious now as to how much Detroit will get at the TDL if Staal’s good enough to flip.

Maybe people will stop demanding a first for every dump now.

Great move for both teams. Yzerman still has a lot of work to do to fix that colossal mess Holland left behind.

Pretty sweet cap dump for the Rangers. Marleau was still a pretty capable bottom six skater when he was traded for a 1st to CAR by the Leafs last summer.

Staal is probably a 6/7 D on an average defensive team at this point. I think this deal is a solid win for NYR and a deal they had to make to sign Tony D.

See the Marleau dump from the Leafs costing them a 1st last season. If teams are desperate enough to free up cap space (not necessarily the case for New York here), other teams can very well take advantage of that and demand a higher price than usual.

It’s not exactly off-the-wall to think Staal could’ve costed the Rangers a 1st if they were in any more on a predicament.

someone is always willing to take on defense. Even if it's a bad contract.

There is never enough. Easiest contracts to move in the NHL.

This was fair value. Toronto had to trade 1st last year to dump a similar contract

If Staal with 1 season left and Cap Hit $5.7M is worth a 2nd. So how much it take to move Seabrook?

About what I thought it would take for Rangers to move Staal, the big bonus on this trade which makes it a win for Winga is what they are giving

Future considerations, likely means low low pick.
