Staal trade as a guide

Created by: Seider53
Team: 2020-21 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 27, 2020
Published: Sep. 27, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Lots of scope to make similar moves next offseason, likely use a pick or two to move up to try and pick better quality assets.
Nashville trade is tricky, pick 11 should be a great player but Turris at 6 mil for 4 more is rough. The effect on Detroit isn't huge and it would be worth seeing if he has the chemistry with Mantha that he had at the WC.
Conditions on trades are a guess and could easily be changed. Keep some of the prospects in Europe, team likely takes a step forward but is still 30th or 31st.

JJ buried is 6.6 mil (over 3 years) i wouldn't say that is worth POJ+ (I would say Legare is worth a late second in a relatively weaker class) vs Staal...

No reason for a Vancouver to do that trade. Benn only has 1 year left, not a lot of salary and can play in the bottom pairing on either side. Easy pass

Understandable, I would take one of the prospects, Glendening carries the value of the draft pick in the deal. I had seen the deal suggested by a number of pens fans.

Understandable, Benn could be replaced by Baertschi and one of our prospects could fill the spot on the blue line. While some fans may believe Baertschi would take contract termination, but he's losing a heck of a lot of money if he does. I picked Benn early on presuming there wouldnt be cap space for Baertschi or Sutter from Vancouver.

Ya For Pens trade, I’d say no POJ. Otherwise fine. Not sure they need Glendening anymore either

Believe it or not, it appears James Reimer actually has positive value. No need for CAR to give that much Fleury, even at 50%.

You're expecting too much in the Pens trade and you're basically bailing Vegas out like Yzerman did the Rangers with that crappy Staal trade.

Would have to be one of Roussel, Beagle or Eriksson. Understand that Eriksson may be a non starter.

I would think an Eriksson deal would make best sense for both teams next offseason, 2nd and a prospect to represent a state of higher desperation and a slightly worse contract than the Staal deal

That’s fair. As a Canuck’s fan, would prefer they force Eriksson to retire or stay in the ECHL for the next two years.

How are the finances of the team? I would think he could be kept as a 13th forward/healthy scratch for a season without preventing you from re-signing anyone. It's the Hughes/Pettersson offseason where a 13th forward @ $6m becomes more problematic.

Challenge this year is resigning all their UFAs and RFAs. Think Tanev is gone and maybe Markstrom. Aside from that, your point is correct

See, the Staal trade made me think about hopes, and Detroit fans on here do seem to like to aim high. I would like more, but the Vegas/Canes 3 way trade gets us a serviceable stopgap (Who I would probably re-sign tbh), a 1st round pick, a conditional 3rd and a 4 place upgrade in the 2nd round. That's huge value.
My thinking with the Leafs trade is that the difference between the two picks is minimal, but Kerfoot can wait there until one of the prospects is ready to take over at C, at which point he can be flipped for a mid pick again, it's not sexy but it's better than Nielsen.

My issue with the Vegas trade is giving up a 2nd to vegas, hirose should be enough.

My issue with the leafs trade is that kerfoot is one of the worst players in the entire league and I wouldn't ever trade him from for anything. Not to mention leafs are in a cap situation right now and if they want to trade us kerfoot then it's going to cost them a 2nd, not us a 3rd. I am not going to help a division rival take a garbage player and pay for it. The guy makes 3.5 million and scored 9 goals and 19 assists whike switching between top 6 winger with jt and Mathews or 3C and just can't get it done. The guy is legit a bust player and we should never surround ourselves with someone like him. Look at his interviews also, he's an ego maniac and he just really should never be on the wings

I can't see Nashville giving up a 1st to be rid of Turris. Let alone the possibility of 2 1sts. They'll buy him out if they can be rid of him for a couple 2nds or mid round picks with 2M retention.

Do not see JJ as costing much more than Staal to dump, especially not the gulf between a 2021 2nd and first + second round prospects and a 2020 3rd

Glendening does nothing for Pittsburgh, they have better options in the org
