67million dollar contender

Created by: Eli
Team: 2020-21 Ottawa Senators
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 27, 2020
Published: Sep. 27, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Marner's compensation is mostly signing bonuses in July. Same with Andersen. Their combined salary for this season, through June, is $1.7 million.

So spare me your nonsense about how broke the ownership group is. They can 100% afford to do this, as a rental. Can this team with the Stanley Cup?

The cap hit before the Leafs trade says $67.7M. That's about what this team costs, for this year.

If it's not a contender, what could be better without raising the budget? If it is a contender, how do you get the trades to go through, without wrecking Ottawa's future?

Does winning the Cup in 2021 get this team profitable enough to spend $70M on salaries the next season, keeping Marner?

Or if this is just one shot at greatness, where do they trade Marner next June, and for what?

Trades
1.
OTT
  1. Lundqvist, Henrik ($4,250,000 retained)
Additional Details:
half retained because the Rangers want to develop Georgiev and Shesterkin. The right goalie for Ottawa because they are all in for a Cup this year
NYR
  1. Anisimov, Artem
Additional Details:
Plays well with Panarin. Let's the Rangers move Strome to line three with a UFA winger and spread out the offense.
2.
OTT
  1. Turris, Kyle
  2. 2020 3rd round pick (MIN)
Additional Details:
Needs ice time to score points. Isn't getting that behind Duchene and Johansen.
NSH
  1. 2020 2nd round pick (DAL)
Additional Details:
$6,000,000 in cap space and actual money. You're welcome, Nashville.
3.
ARI
  1. Gáborík, Marián
Additional Details:
Ottawa adds a pick if the Gaborik contract is uninsured. If it's insured, they're just renting Hjalmarsson for actual money, while letting Arizona cut costs.
4.
OTT
  1. Andersen, Frederik
  2. Bracco, Jeremy [RFA Rights]
  3. Dermott, Travis [RFA Rights]
  4. Marner, Mitchell
  5. 2020 1st round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
Marner makes $700k this year. https://www.capfriendly.com/players/mitchell-marner
Andersen makes $1M this year.
Demott and Bracco likely combine for more salary than those two, through June. Total around $3.5M. But they move way, way up in the draft and they pocket $12.4M in cap space, allowing them to easily sign Pietrangelo, and still maybe pick up Ennis or someone average at 3C to push Kerfoot to wing, or just sign Pietrangelo with cap left over to save up for a Rielly extension.
TOR
  1. Nilsson, Anders
  2. Wolanin, Christian
  3. 2020 1st round pick (SJS)
Additional Details:
$3.3M salary going to Toronto, so Sens only take on $200k in salary to get four decent players, but they move back in the draft, and two of the new guys are just rentals.

Um just what? Most of these contracts are unrealistic and the trades are too.

What a joke neither Lundqvist of Hjalmarsson aren waiving their NMCs for Ottawa, Guess you missed the memo where Hjalmarsson said he'd not waive his NMC. And you basically just made the team worse.

Depends if he meant contender for another top 5 pick.

When teams tell guys that they won't get to play there anymore, guys waive NMCs all the time. Marner, Turris, and Andersen don't have NMC's. Once Ottawa gets them, it seems likely that playing there would be more appealing than not playing.

You're saying I made the team worse by trading Nilsson, Wolanin, and Anisimov? Or by adding two 50 point centers, a 90 point wing, one of the best defensive defensemen in the league, and two starting goalies?

Your comment is "yikes."

I kept every center they have,* and added two guys with 60 point seasons at center. Or is "yikes" a compliment in Montreal? We don't really say that in Flyover.

*except Anisimov. FIne. Is Anisimov that much better than Mikael Granlund and Kyle Turris, or are we enjoying Brunch too much?

Turris = 40 pt scorer = Granlund = Anisimov = Tierney
All are 40 pt scorers

That Leafs trade is insane. Take out the first rounder and it's fair.

I don't think they're a top ten team, but I think they definitely make the playoffs behind a carousel of three good starting goalies, and then Hjalmarsson and Lundqvist shut opponents down enough that if Marner and Tkachuk just get a point a game, each, they might sneak through.

Nonsense. Turris is a 64 point center who only gets 40 points in Nashville because Nasville only has 3C or 2L ice-time for him. Granlund is the same. If Domi doesn't get 70 points a year at 3C and 2L in Montreal, does he stop being a 70 point center? If you want to knock Granlund, Turris, or Domi, all you have to say is "defense," but pretending they don't score points is just silly.

Then take out Pietrangelo, though.

Turris has gotten <40 pts for the past 3 years
Granlund just didn't fit in with NSH.
Domi got 70 because he got 30 goals. He won't do that again.

Someone just posted a link to some expert projections on contract values. I got each one within 1M except Hainsey, who I honestly don't think Ottawa re-signs, and I'm not positive another team pays him based on performance at his age. Read 'em and weep. https://thehockeycode.com/nhl-contract-projections-2020/
