They don't need to move Parayko at all. They have the cap space for Petro. The issue isn't the money it's how the deal is structured.

I think the Blues are playing hardball with Petro because they prefer promoting Parayko versus seeking a trade for him to restructure the roster with Pietrangelo. That being said, if the Blues made this move, traded sanford and gunnarsson, and signed Petro for 8m AAV, it's hard to say their roster wouldn't look better - petro > parayko (for a few more yrs), nylander >> sanford. I don't think it's a realistic scenario but personally I wouldn't be too upset. Probably rather hang onto Parayko and avoid a potentially hindering Petro contract, but nylander is a gem so the temptation is real.

Pietro contract will end up = $9 - $10.5 million

The Leafs should have traded Nylander instead of Kapanen to recapture a 1st Rd pick, prospects and cap space...Kapanen will score 25-30 goals if given a chance in the top 6 role with the Pens....Nylander is only a 25-30 goal scorer when matched with Matthews or J.T. If Nylander was placed on the 3rd line he would have put up equal totals as Kapanen.

You are clearly not a leaf fan because Kapanen is not a top 6 forward and never was. He has very little high end offensive skill. He was disastrous and a line killer

I like this take. Obviously for cash reasons it's better to keep Parayko but when you look around the league there are very few teams that will improve this summer with a flat cap. So if the blues improve at all they are ahead

Kapanen was a stone handed gas can. I liked his effort and speed but he is a 3rd line player in the NHL. You will see this season

If Rust can go from 18 goal scoring 3rd liner to 27 goal scoring top line winger, so can Kapanen.
