Team: 2020-21 Pittsburgh Penguins
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 27, 2020
Published: Sep. 27, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Some lineup changes to spread the wealth.

Tanev could be the new Dupuis. Tanev-Geno-Rust can be a very tenacious line with the scoring burden left for Geno and Rust.

This lets Zucker play the 3rd line and give more scoring touch.

JJ (when buried bc any sane team would do that) at 50% has a 575kx3 cap hit (i think, maybe 620kx3)... I don't think that should cost a second to move...

It cost the Rangers a 2nd to move only one year of Staal. Considering Staal's cap hit vs. what this cap hit would be along with term, I think it's about the same.

We would not have to send a 2nd AND retain 50% of only a $3,250,000 contract when NYR didn’t retain any even with a year left.

I don't think you compare apples to apples with Staal and JJ. Just because JJ is $2M less, the three years make a difference, so lowering the salary would be necessary IMO.

Pretty sure that's not how it works. If Pittsburgh retains 50% on Johnson's salary, they get 50% of the cap relief if he is buried in the AHL. So the cap hit to whichever team trades for him would still be $1.05M for three years if he is buried.

I think it's still worth it. Very small cap hit for a team that has no short-term plans to make a run and get a 2nd.

Maybe. I think the Kings would consider it. However, if Pittsburgh is retaining 50%, the Kings would probably just buy him out. That would keep him on Pittsburgh's books for 6 more seasons.

JJ would be at most like 3.15 mil split over 3 years when he inevitably gets buried (and I still think it would only be 1.5)... Staal was almost 6 mil and all in 1 year... (or 4.5 if he gets buried)

Nah, only the team that buries him gets the savings, from the CBA FAQ on here:
"Teams who retain salary on a players contract, will have the full value of the cap hit act against the teams salary cap total, regardless of whether the player is reassigned to the minors by their current team."
I'm assuming that means the full savings from him getting buried should go to the team that takes JJ

the "balancing the top-9" strategy worked with Kessel on the 3rd line, but IDK if PIT has a player that can drive a line like that...IDK if McCann + Zucker + whoever can be a dynamic 3rd line. definitely something to keep in the back pocket, but I think they prefer the offense in the top-6 and defense in the bottom-6. also they didn't trade for Zucker to play him 3rd line....I mean if they get a better 3rd line piece and throw a McCann or Simon in the top 6 to balance it out that would be intriguing...

With all do respect they didn't bring Kessel in to play the third line either. I think Zucker-McCann- and someone like Jesper Fast can be very effective, but yes, you don't want to do that unless you can still keep the top-six effective.

oh for sure I get that and that's a very correct point. I'd like a 3rd line that just keeps momentum going. if they could have just a little offense...like 40-50 goals total maybe with good offense and speed I'd love that. we have the shutdown line in the 4th line and the top-6 set but I don't want to just have random guys there...we saw how that worked out with the gongshow mccann Marleau Hornqvist line....

Agreed. I'm just concerned with Scevior here that he's making his way to the third line.

Tanev doesn’t have the scoring touch to warrant playing in the top 6, and Zucker isn’t as much as a creator as Kessel was, so playing on the 3rd line without someone to distribute the puck to him (or downgrading him from Geno to McCann) will hamper his ability to score to say the least.

Prior to coming to the Pens and playing with Sid, neither did Dupuis.

Tanev had only 1 season of note before joining the Penguins where he got 29 points. Dupuis had a 48 point season and muiltiple seasons where he couldve scored 30-40 points had he stayed healthier. Tanev has no hands either, Dupuis had far more skill with the puck on his stick. Tanev is a Hagelin type at best, and it does Crosby or Malkin no favors to put him in the top 6 over Zucker, McCann, or hell Samuel Poulin.

He also played seven seasons prior to coming to the Pens and that 48 point season was a total outlier.

He put up: 1, 27, 48, 26, 26, and 19, so that's poor argument. Dupuis had a much larger sample size with only one year outlier year compared to others. Dupuis played 419 games before joining the Pens and Tanev played 195. Tanev was on pace to hit or break 30 points this year and that was playing the fourth line. It's not unreasonable to think he could hit or break 40 playing in the top six.

Then a 2nd isnt necessary with that much retained.
