Could Dermott play in a top 4 role? I know that he had to in the play in because of injury but I don't know too much about him

I wouldn't mind the Philly trade, especially if Patrick is healthy.

It's an overpayment for Laughton. I like him and would welcome him, but Dermott has so much untapped potential and is only 23. I would wait on him, maybe a 1 for 1 but would rather get him a different way.

He has everything in the tool box, great skater, good shot, great passer, not afraid to get physical, great effort - but he just hasn't been able to effectively play those top minutes without having brain farts and making a bad play

He still hasn't had much of a chance to play those top minutes either, he's stuck behind Muzzin and Reilly

It could just be age, I wouldn't be surprised to see him figure it out in a few years, defenceman take longer to mature

Also, if he can't play the right side (which jury is out rn, it's unsure), he's basically stuck behind Muzzin and Reilly

I really don't want to trade Laughton but I think I'd consider this if depending on how much Dermott is going to get with the new contract

for the leafs it would be a bridge deal, maybe just 1 year for like 1-1.5M, he can't really ask for much, as he's basically a bottom pair dman at this point

basically it forces you to trade Haggs rights or Ghost, which would be selling low on Ghost. And you need to get Dermott a contract. Hes definately an upgrade, but how much do you have left over to address the hole that not having Laughton will pose? $2.5m? I think Laughtons a bargain at $2.3 being able to play 3C or LW anywhere in the lineup. Not a lot of guys like that for $2.5m who are also as defensively responsible and as good as Laughton on the PK. Not to mention Laughts is coming off a pretty productive year too

He's never played consistently in the top 4 on the right side where he's most comfortable and the leafs have had too many defensemen who play the same style as he does that he's never really been given a fair shot

I like Laughton a lot but if there was ever a time to sell high, it would be now. We got a few guys who could fill his spot serviceably. More than likely he'll walk after next season when he's reaches ufa so getting a guy in Dermott who we would have control over the next 3-4 years would be nice. Dermott can slot in on the third pair with Hagg and be a solid #5. From what I've seen from Leaf fans he's got potential but hasn't been able to put it together. Hopefully he can find that with the Flyers. I don't think he'll cost much either. Also, I'm a huge Ghost fan and I think he can still be a good player for us if he's utilized properly (1st power play and paired with Myers). Unfourtantly, I don't see that happening anymore. He's fallen out of favor with AV and the organization. I get not wanting to sell low on him but at this point I don't think his value will increase much keeping him. Shipping out for picks/prospects and use that for cap space.
