NJD declines.

If you are trading a players rights, you have to discount him. Not as much for RFA as you would for UFA, obviously.

Montour at $7 million x 7 years
Montour at $3 million x 3 years

Very different trade values.

What? I honestly dont understand what point your trying to make.
He is rfa so he is under total team control. So no there is no need for a discount?
I dont know where you pulled 7x7 out of but that number won't be close. He will get between 3 and 4 for 2-3 years

I signed Montour before I traded him, I didn't trade his rights.

Like the change...think that is far easier to value that way

Was saying if he had an albatross of a deal, his trade value goes down. Without knowing the contract, it’s hard to know trade value. That unknown = a risk, which is why teams would discount.

I didn't make a change. He was signed from the beginning.

Sorry....my mistake. Could have sworn I saw "RFA Rights" next to his name.

You hold all the cards in the negotiation tho. Cant talk to other teams and even if it goes to arbitration it won't go higher than 4.5 at the absolute most but realistically its 3.5 or 4.0. So there is no chance at an albatross contract. So again no discount

So NJD would pay full price in trade without knowing how much his salary is? Doesn’t work that way. Has never worked that way.

Players get traded this way all the time.

It’s more rare than you think for RFA rights to be traded. And when it does happen, it is at a discount.
