Murphy is a very good shut down defenseman that would be a big piece of our lineup, and Severson is a top pairing d-man who can contribute a lot offenseively, and play decent defense. It would only take Nylander to get the Devils' best defenseman in return.

Big picture, this lineup has better defense and goaltending than the 19-20 leafs, more grit and skill in the bottom six forwards. The question is whether, when they get a full year playing with Matthews or Tavares, either of Mikheyev or Kassian can can produce the 50-60 points that Nylander is capable of. I'm guessing no, but they each get 40. With better defense and goaltending, that keeps the Leafs right where they are, in the standings.

Take LIljegren out of the Devils trade, at least. They'd probably give you Zacha and Severson for just Nylander. Could throw in more salary if you wanted. They have McLeod ready to try out at 3C, and have too much cash committed to a defense with too much offense and not enough defense, as is. Nylander gives them hope for the future and a roster spot to sign a UFA defensive defenseman, or develop one of the ones they have.

And it would be a huge loss for TO. Being the best defenceman on a terrible teams doesn't mean you are a great defenceman. Nylander would instantly become the best player in New Jersey while Severson would be at best the 3rd best defenceman on the leafs.

Big picture, deeper on defence yes but way worse up front. Way worse.

Probably not much better, but to lose an elite forward for a #3 defenceman and a small upgrade at 3C is poor planning.

There are a few things that you're missing. A.) No one wants Raanta. B.) AZ needs to shed salary C.) Freddie costs $1M where Darcy still has a total of $9M to be spent over the next 2 years. D.) It'll cost TOR in additional assets in order to get the better goalie. I can't express enough that no one wants Raanta.
