A Conservative Off-Season Guess for the Detroit Red Wings

Created by: xvash2
Team: 2020-21 Detroit Red Wings
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 28, 2020

Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Estimating what the Detroit Red Wings look like for next season, given an approach of being as conservative as possible. All RFAs are retained for somewhere in the 900-1M range, No additional trades are made, with the only signing being a 1A/1B goaltender to accompany Bernier. I chose Greiss here but there are several other options I could see fitting in for a similar price tag.

Here, Yzerman is frankly expecting another tank season, and is preparing for it by keeping drafted players developing in their respective leagues and ensuring Filppula and Nielsen are playing down the middle.

Overpaid Griess, under-termed Bert and Mantha.

Otherwise this is basically option B if we don't take another contract for assets.

You're probably right, I could see Bertuzzi and Mantha potentially opting for less term though. Otherwise if they take 6 year deals, they may peak and fall all within that 6 years and never get a big payout. Mantha in particular plays like a potential $8M player when healthy and consistent but has only put together one full season so far in his career.

I don't know what Greiss' ask will be but he played well in NYI this year so I could see it being a bit higher. In the end though Detroit's problem is not financial, rather figuring out what players to put and where since there is such a logjam of borderline NHL talent.

Zadina probably won't make the first line in 2021
