Initial Creation Date: Sep. 29, 2020
Published: Sep. 29, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Tampa sheds cap for futures. Detroit gets young 2 way number 2 centre who fits perfectly in line with their rebuild.
Vegas gets cap space and signs Lehner. They also get 2x2nd round pick (one basically being a late first). Detroit gets a good goalie tandem in Fleury and Bernier and they get a blue chip prospect in Glass to build around.
They sign Brodie or someone similar to protect Hronek and Seider.
They still keep 4th overall this year and next years first rounder is top 10 protected.

Their team looks well on their way if they go down this route.

I like it.

Traded picks to get very young players. If he could do this... He would. Not sure he can get Glass or Cirelli for that matter. Detroit has a few good pieces in Mantha, Larkin, Bertuzzi. In this scenario they build around those and could start being competetive.

Why on Earth would Detroit spend a 1st, 2x 2nd, and a 3rd on a trade for Cirelli?

An offer sheet that Tampa couldn't match would only cost a 1st and 3rd ($4,363,096 - $6,544,640).

Well in the offer sheet I think that first round pick would need to be guaranteed. This prevents them from losing a top 10 pick next year. Also, other teams will be on the bidding and it may take this much for Tampa to trade him or for them to win the trade sweepstakes.

Yes, losing the 1st round pick in 2021 isn't ideal. But the 2022 draft pick is still going to be a top 10 pick for the Wings as they'll be playing a very young team except on the 1st line.

Besides, the player gets to sign the offer sheet and the threat of him being able to do so will keep a lot of team from any bidding war over assets for his RFA rights. They wouldn't bid beyond the 1st and 3rd they would get back from another team's offer sheet for example from say the Colorado Avalanche with plenty of cap room and an expected 2021 pick in the high 20's. At least not while it is just RFA rights.

It's why teams very seldomly trade for RFA rights without having worked out the basis of a contract first.

Yzerman has stated over and over again we are building through the draft, he reiterated it after acquiring staal. We aren't trading picks, we are acquiring them.

No to cirelli trade, we are trading way to much for a defensive center, he's not a franchise center worth all of that. He's worth a 2nd at best, this is a hard pass.

We aren't trading 32oa. So the Vegas deal is a pass, while I would love glass, we should be taking advantage of other teams willing to pay us to take their cap hits, not take a cap hit and give up assets, so this is a pass as well.

We will be using all our picks to put together a team in the next few years that lasts a long time, no shortcuts like this is taking place.
