Exactly how one sided is getting 8th overall for Thomas? Not saying that blues would make that trade, especially with tank being out possibly depending on when the season starts. But leafs fans are even more sick and tired of hearing unwarranted complaints.
Also calling Thomas one of your best players is a real shot at your top tier players. He is a good young player with potential to do more,
Here is why it is one-sided. Look at it from the Blues' perspective. This year, Thomas outperformed Bozak for the 3C job and briefly, Schenn for the 2C job as a 20 year old. He is on an ELC. He is a natural centerman. He has drastically improved year-over-year since becoming an NHL player. He is clearly in the top ten best players from the 2017 draft as it currently stands. He looks like he will be a top six center for the rest of his time with the Blues. In addition, the Blues believe they are contenders right now, and their core isn't getting any younger ( Schenn, O'Reilly, Tarasenko, Parayko, Schwartz are all over 27+, Pietrangelo too if he stays though I'm assuming he hasn't because Holl is coming back in this trade) so we can assume that they'll mortgage whatever future Thomas has and look for immediate improvement next year.
Likely available at #8: Maybe Rossi though I doubt it, Quinn, Sanderson, Lundell, Holtz. Most of those players are good (not Sanderson) and would be excellent additions to the Blues on paper. But are any of those players going to step in and probably challenge for the 2C spot on this team next year? No? Then it's not a better situation then the Blues have right now. Picks are magic beans. The #8 pick is a pretty good magic bean, but at the end of the day you take the established player over magic beans every day of the week, especially when they are making the same amount of money and your window is wide open.
We could trade the pick I guess, but what kind of trade is going to be better than a top nine center making less than a million whose floor is forty points?
I get that you feel it's unwarranted complaints but if you consider how the Blues view their roster (as contenders), then this trade is only good for the leafs. The value is fine- maybe- but it makes no sense for the Blues, which is why it is one sided. I'm really not trying to be a dick about this, but if you want people to stop bashing on Leafs fans for trades then you guys gotta start thinking about stuff other than your own team. And this isn't exclusive to leafs fans, all fans are guilty of this, including my own, but the Leafs come after the Blues for our stuff all the time and there's so many more of you on here that there's going to be more dumb trades by leafs fans than anyone else. The Leafs are the most popular and richest team in the league, I'm sure you can weather some complaints on capfriendly.
As for calling Thomas one of our best player- who would you definitely say is better? O'Reilly, Pietrangelo if he's still on the team...? Anyone else? Maybe Tarasenko, if he still has a career as an elite player after a third shoulder surgery? Maybe Parayko, but I think we're splitting hairs between a 27 year old maybe top pairing RHD and a 20 year old maybe top line center, and one of those is not in their prime yet. You can call 32 year old Perron and 29 year old Schenn better and I guess you're technically correct as they had more productive years but Thomas wasn't far behind them with 42 points, had better underlying numbers and, again, age and position is a big factor here.
