The Blueprint

Created by: JimCarrey
Team: 2018-19 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 8, 2016
Published: Oct. 8, 2016
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Quick explanation:
Were already weak on the LW so we resign JVR
Matthews, Marner, Nylander are the real deal...Accept it
Timashov/Johnson/Leipsic could surprise you, but i see them as top 9 material (fair projection) so we find a top6 LW (somehow)
Naz is a solid 2nd centre, but maybe Bozak's replacement and kadri both play 2/3 Centre minutes
Leo's spot could EASILY be taken by one of the 4 below him...As well They have all played LW so could take the 3LW spot
Martin also could easily be 13th Forward...Bottom 6 could really shake out it a bunch of ways (i havent even mentioned guys like Bracco, Moore, Lindberg, Leivo, Dzierkals, etc.)

IMO our D's future actually looks pretty clear...
Maybe Marincin/Zaitsev/Carrick play with Mo...who knows but i would be nice to have a Defensive top paring RHD to play with Rielly

Andersen is obviously our guy for a while...just need a backup to play 30 games a year (could be enroth)

Don't focus too much on salaries...its tough to predict with unknown players

Don't know why you think LW is so weak. Johnson, Timsahov, Leipsic, Martin, Komarov, Soshnikov, Lindberg are all LH shots. RH shots are Marner, Nylander, Brown, Hyman Kapanen, Leivo and Bracco.
Admitting all of these players may fill, the # 1 LWer role (I hate ratings of lines). You gotta think Marner, Matthews and Nylander are going to be powerplay specialists.

If JVR goes via free agency, there will be money to spend on another LWer if needed. Never mind the ridding of the Lupul, Robadias, Bozak, Michalek, Greening and Gleason contracts.
By the way Nielsen has played on the right side all his career although he shoots left. Good players are always welcome but Zaitsev could be a # 1 RHD,but you are correct maybe another UFA in 2018 might be available.

The truth is, outside of our top 3, a lot of our really good prospects are going to miss:

Johnson, Timashov, Kapanen, Brown, Bracco, Leipsic, Grundstrom, and Lindberg

But we only need a couple of them to succeed, there's only 4 winger positions within the top six.

I think by the end of this year, a lot of things will be a lot more clear in terms of player projection/capabilities. Look at our defense core, can Marincin and Rielly play top 2 minutes? Can Gardiner solidify himself as a top 4 defenseman? Can Zaitsev prove to be a steal? Who will emerge from the bottom pairing? Carrick?

So many questions that need to be answered

I think you nailed the D players, although Dermott-Nielson should be ready in 2 years to make up the third pair over Marincin-Carrick. As far as your 1RHD is concerned, Brent Burns is a UFA next year. Rielly-Burns, Gardiner-Zaitsev, Dermott-Nielson?

I think Burns would be perfect for Toronto, however:

1) He really wants to stay in SJ
2) I doubt he would want to go to Toronto, even if he grew up in Barrie
3) A contract for him could be really costly, I'm not saying he wouldn't be worth it now, but in 5,6,7 years how good is he going to be?
4) Lou will make him groom himself; something Burns probably doesn't wanna do smile
