I hate how this hangs it's hat on a nine-million-dollar Pietrangelo.

I think it's reasonable to assume that Edmonton could acquire Georgiev and Faksa with what little assets Edmonton actually has. I'm incredibly skeptical that they'll be the club to overpay for Pietrangelo, and I don't even think it's because he wouldn't want to sign here. I'm disinterested in buying Neal out and paying the cost to sell on the trio you need to move in order to afford another anchor deal.

I don't see Larsson as a long-term piece: anyone here who's caught on to his decline isn't wrong about him not being the player he was supposed to become. If he can't sort his back injury out soon, he's going to find himself out of the league quickly. I also think he'd be part of the deal to acquire Faksa if Edmonton chose to do so.

I genuinely believe Edmonton's best bet for a cup is to damn the blueline and overload the forwards and goaltenders until the development of current prospects makes the blueline competitive. A more extreme version of what Toronto is running at the moment, as I think it's better suited against the top teams of the West. Edmonton can't genuinely afford names like OEL, Ekblad, or Pietrangelo: the procurement of top-pairing defencemen has to come by way of the draft, and they're sitting on a quality cluster of rearguards. It's going to take time to get them to that point, but if the investment today can be made on a quality, long-term #1 goaltender and making Edmonton's top-three lines as difficult to contain as possible, I think they have an honest-to-God chance.

Once the blueline has progressed, balance the team by way of selling the third line. I mean, on paper, it's that easy, right?

This is a very good team you've assembled. Assuming that Puljujarvi and DeBrusk fulfill their promise, it's a definite contender, although the defense will take time to mature. Most of it appears within reason. Georgiev you can probably acquire simply by exchanging the 14th and 22nd overall picks in this year's draft. Klefbom might bring more than DeBrusk. The sticking point, to me, is Faksa. Since he's young and has obvious promise, Dallas will probably want Lavoie and Samorukov plus for him. In their structure and cap position, I can't see them having any interest in the other surplus players you have listed, particularly Larsson.

I can see Kerfoot as a cheap alternative. But that 3C has to be defensive minded to take pressure off the top 2 centres
