Pens don't have a 1st this year or next year. You already traded Murray to Carolina. So the Wings wouldn't be taking Jack Johnson. 3 years left on his deal. You're stuck with him.

We took Staal when we needed a LHD, and got a 2nd for 1 year of a cap hit.

Why would we take Johnson and get nothing to do so?

Terrible value for Murray (not to mention you threw Simon in), why would we trade Murray for a worse goalie and only get a 4th? We could just trade Murray for a 2nd round pick and then keep DeSmith (who was a good backup.) Not sure how we get any better after this sequence, signing Shattenkirk is nice but thats probably not enough money to get him anyway.

Why would Yzerman do that? Johnson has 3 years left on his contract. Staal only had 1. Hence the 2nd round pick. It'll cost the Pens more to move JJ. They don't have a 1st this year or next year. They won't want to move their best prospect. They're stuck with Jack Johnson.
