Description

Koskinen is not a cap dump
He had a .917 SV%, which is pretty impressive considering the quality of Edmonton's defense. For reference, Markstrom had a .918 SV% this year, and will look for 6M+ in UFA. Koskinen was the 12th best goalie this season according to the Evolving Wild goalie model, and 9th in the league according to the CSA goalie model. His +10.75 goals differential (saved 10.75 more goals than expected) was 7th in the NHL. His +1.07 SV% was 9th, just behind Crawford and Binnington. Koskinen's contract looked bad at the time of the signing, but he's certainly lived up to it this season.

Yup.

I see people saying Kris Russell isn't a cap dump (trading him for actual value), but somehow Koskinen is.

Small sample size. He was awful over the course of a full season. You don't just pay for a few performances. Talk to me when he has Markstrom's season over 60 games

Tuuka Rask played just 4 more games than Koskinen this season, and he finished 2nd in Vezina voting...

Im sure every GM would rather have Koskinen then say Greiss whom can be had for free and will come at a cheaper cap hit the Koskinen. Yup.

I wouldn't say he is a cap dump and EDM would be idiots to trade him because in todays G market there isn't a good return.

Not sure anyone was suggesting he’s a 60+ game starter. There are very few of them around and we did that with talbot and suffered the following year because of it. Can kosk be reliable over a 50 games I don’t think he’s given a reason to doubt it. With all the goalies available which is historic amount I’m not sure any are better that could be had for the money he makes.

And playing your goalie into two injuries in the same season is the best use of a asset

That's pretty fair. You could make the argument that he's overpaid, but has been a decent goalie for all intents and purposes.

They will. They're looking for a 1B replacement for Smith to play in tandem with Koskinen. Many people mistakenly believe that Edmonton is in the market for a "true starter", but they aren't.

Greiss had a worse SV% behind a much better defensive system...cant tell if youre being serious or not
