Description
I like OEL and I think he serves as an excellent Edler replacement in the future. He’s probably got 5 good years left in him before he shrinks down to a bottom 4 D-man. If the Canucks can keep their core in place, it could open up a cup window with maybe a 30% chance at the cup over the next 5 years (I e 7% per year chance).

That said, I wouldn’t look to sell the farm for him. All core players should be off the table along with podkolzin, hoglander, and next years 1st. His cap hit is massive and goes till his late 30’s. It would be a big mistake to sacrifice core pieces to bring him over. He causes more problems than he fixes if boeser or some one is sent the other way.

He is not a player to build around, but rather a piece to bring in to push the team over the top (similar to McDonough in Tampa).

Eriksson would have to be going back in the trade to make the cap work. I don’t think this would be too big of a deal for Zona since they save $9.5 million in real dollars over the next two years in an Eriksson for OEL swap which I know is important for that franchise.

The other assets are just what I would be willing to include. If a combination of some or all of those assets does not get the trade done, then I wouldn’t do that trade.
Trades
ARI
  1. Eriksson, Loui
  2. Gaudette, Adam [RFA Rights]
  3. Juolevi, Olli
  4. Lind, Kole
  5. Virtanen, Jake [RFA Rights]
  6. 2021 2nd round pick (VAN)
Additional Details:
Blah blah quantity over quality. I know. I wouldn’t give up quality for OEL is the point

Just curious. If you see OEL as being similar to McDonagh (and maybe he is, maybe he isn't), why are you giving up a package that is several times worse than what the Rangers got?

A cap dump, two bottom-6 forwards, two B prospects, and a 2nd round pick. To suggest that is even a realistic price is kind of silly. If you don't want to pay the price to acquire him, that's obviously your choice, but that is nowhere near enough.

Agree with you. OEL would be a nice add, but his cap hit and likely acquisition cost make it extremely unlikely for the Canucks IMO. Besides that, he’s shown signs of decline the last couple years.

OEL’s contract is really bad. McDoniugh was a 1.5 year rental and re-signed for under 7 million. Imo buyer beware with OEL do to contract. If he had 2 years left at 6 million, I would pay much much more for him

Aside from the obvious contract differences already mentioned, here are some on-ice results contrasting the two players.

OEL's 5v5 GF% (rel) for the past 4 years:

2016-17: 45.69% (+2.92)
2017-18: 45.76% (-0.47)
2018-19: 43.93% (-2.74)
2019-20: 48.28% (-3.34)

McDonagh's 5v5 GF% (rel) for the 4 years prior to the trade:

2014-15: 54.72% (-3.52)
2015-16: 60.36% (+8.79)
2016-17: 54.08% (+1.91)
2017-18: 53.95% (+13.41)

OEL's declining results coupled with his age and his massive contract means nobody is going to give up much for him.
