6M Subban

Created by: Eli
Team: 2020-21 Washington Capitals
Initial Creation Date: Oct. 1, 2020
Published: Oct. 1, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Caps rent Subban for one year to try to see if his old coach can get him producing again, and if he can help the Caps win the Cup again. It sounds great, but last year Subban had 18 points and was -21 at a 9M cap hit. Last year Kempny had 18 points and was +19 at 2.5M.

Next offseason, even if he has another bad year, they can retain 1.5M and trade him for a 2nd. Because who doesn't want to give 4.5M P.K. Subban a chance?

Obviously, the Zadorov deal only makes sense if Zadorov's asking price is a bunch lower than Brenden Dillon's, because they bring a very similar physical game, and age isn't a big factor if the Caps are all-in. On the other hand, with McMichael, Alexeyev, and Fehervary developing nicely, who says they have to be all-in?

Penguins fans are not always assumed to be neutral parties on Caps threads.

That's cool. Do you think the Preds would prefer a proven top-pair supporting guy like Kempny?

They're also pretty stacked at center and goalie. I suppose Panik or Hagelin plus Arizona's 3rd could work for WSH. Probably still have to throw in a prospect. Say.... Brett Leason.

Yep. Do you the New Jersey deal is dumb, or could Subban bounce back, in a smaller role, with a more defensive-minded partner?

I personally think that your giving up a little to much for subban but that's just my opinion

5th on a division champ in points/60. Reirden, the coach who put Burakovsky on a 4th line and killed his numbers, put Boyd and Panik on the fourth line. Boyd has a Stanley Cup ring, and he's good on both special teams. He just gets no ice time. Needs a team with some ice time to give out to someone cheap. Will be the next Barclay Goodrow.

But if you really want to talk trade value, if Zadorov's Q.O. were 2.5M, he would be worth a 2nd and a 3rd. It isn't. He isn't. This was fun. We should do it again.

He’s 27, hasn’t established himself as a full time NHL player. He has zero value. Do you think the Avs just have ice time to hand out when they have guys like Kaut, Bowers and LOC fighting to make the team. Yeah for the Avs he has zero value:

The problem with adding a defenseman like Siegenthaler is that there is an expansion draft coming up. There is no way NSH can protect him, so if he improves next season he would be very enticing for Seattle given his age and then NSH would have lost Jarnkrok for nothing. So it's a tricky spot for NSH in terms of adding defense. I think they'll trade/sign a guy to play on te 3rd pair that they wouldn't mind losing to Seattle and fill the last spot with an expansion-exempt player.

No chance NSH does Jarnkrok+ for Hagelin.

Picks on the other side. Nobody said that. Breathe.

Hags, 3rd, Leason (recent 2nd, plays RW) for Jarnkrok alone.

Boyd is worth a 5th round pick just like Stephenson was.

You weren't particularly clear before, but I'm not taking offense to it.

Either way, I don't see NSH trading for Hagelin - especially in a Jarnkrok deal.

The only players that I think NSH would have interest in (and WSH would listen to offers for) in a Jarnkrok deal are Siegenthaler, Jensen, and Kempny. Trying to solidify their 3rd pair on defense. I'd want Siegenthaler the most but would worry about expansion. It sounds like Poile wants to give Carrier a shot, who is a RHD, so maybe he wouldn't want to add Jensen for that reason. So then there is Kempny, but I value Jarnkrok > Kempny so I think WSH would need to add to that deal. However, NSH may be able to get a better fit on defense for Jarnkrok, so it may be a circle-back type of deal if they don't see anything else they like on the market.

They could also consider a prospect + pick deal, but Hagelin would not be included.

Boyd has potential to play 2nd line and do okay, just like Stephenson does, but you're probably right.

Boyd is 27 now and never cracked a regular role here even in the bottom 6. He's just not that appealing overall.

But I have no doubt he'll break out somewhere else and make BMac look foolish again, least we get that 5th round pick.

You think Arizona's 3rd (80th overall IIRC) would be enough of a plus with Kempny?

No. 'Ville is saying they want to get more value then Kempny, they wouldn't have an expansion protection slot for Kempny, and they'd prefer to get value in the form of a top six wing that WSH doesn't have to offer them. I think the minimum looks like a forward prospect. Maybe a Brett Leason? I think they're thinking long-term and they need wings. Kempny, a top pair LHD with 18 even strength points this year, would otherwise be great value for a forward with 23 even strength points this year.

That's not my takeaway from Villenash's comment at all. Nashville's going to have to go the 8 skater route in the ED (Forsberg, Duchene, Johansen, Arvidsson, Josi, Ellis, Ekholm, and Fabbro), so they either lose Jarnkrok or they trade him and risk losing the return in the ED. That's why picks and prospects might make the most sense, but a middle ground like Kempny and a 3rd means they fill a hole for this year, and even if they lose Kempny in the ED they still at least got the 3rd, so I think that could be a good option too.
