Athanasiou is really bad. Edmonton isnt even going to qualify him. You're better off resigning fast.

I thought Edmonton wasn't going to qualify AA? So we don't need to send anything and can just wait to sign him as UFA.

We could throw them like a 5th or something if we want exclusive negotiating rights I guess? But I'd really rather not spend any assets on him.

Yah, but I don’t like Andersson at all. I don’t know what my counter offer would be since you don’t have a second this year. You wouldn’t do Brett Howden would you?

I agree, if a GM out there thinks Athanasiou at 3 mil is definitely in their interest, and Holland indeed does not, then a trade like this is absolutely what should happen. We just don't know how GM's truly all feel about that 3 mil price tag. If, as reported, Holland is not interested, this is essentially the equivalent of at least two 3rd round picks, with Andersson having upside still to be a solid bottom 6 centre at some point. Considering that the Oil could simply lose the two 2nd rounders they gave up for AA due to this flat cap...I think Holland does this.

Because I would want a second for him, but it looks like you don’t have any for 2 years like Edmonton.

rangers are high on howden. Plus if you aren't going to qualify him then wouldn't you just want to get something? Andersson does have problems I understand that. But he is readjusting and is doing great overseas. Renuanen is going to be good you heard it hear first. And the 3rd is a 3rd. you are getting something for someone you definitely aren't going to qualify. to me its a win for the oilers.

Again I don’t like Andersson, so I wouldn’t do it. I would want to look for a second on either 2020 or 2021, but you don’t have any.

Hey don’t trade for him then. I don’t care. That’s my asking price. He still is good you know. If we had the cap, we would qualify, it’s only because we don’t have much cap space.

I think the move would be to QO AA and then flip him.

I’m betting holland is only leaking to media he’s trying to move AA so the agent will see the market is very dry for his services at 3million and when holland offers him a one year deal at 2 million there is no hesitation on wanting to test free agency and it gets done quickly.

Qualifying is dangerous. If offer qualifying offer he can then take it to arbitration. One season removed from 30 goals 20 the two season before there’s no certainty how arbitration would take the current state of the league into consideration for that reason I wouldn’t even risk it. Very possible could see a 3.5-4 million dollar ruling in this case

It could be, but if Athanasiou accepts the QA he locks in at least one year at $3,000,000. I'm not sure that under the current circumstances Edmonton wants to pay that kind of money to that particular player. There is also the possibility that the player files for salary arbitration, which could be very problematic for Edmonton if the ruling favours the player. If I understand the arbitration rules correctly, Holland can always decline to accept the results which would give Athanasiou the opportunity to test the UFA market. If the Oilers choose to initiate arbitration it is possible that the process allows a minimum contract offer. For Athanasiou that would be 1 X $2,550,000. I think Holland would prefer to sign the player for less than his current salary and avoid arbitration altogether, but Athanasiou really has no ties to the Oilers and might prefer to take his chances as a UFA.

Sure but is he arbitration eligible? Because if he is and he takes his arbitration he can't be traded...
