Very interesting. In this scenario, tho, I imagine salaries would have to be retained. Chicago could pay for $1M each on Versteeg and Bickell's contracts I guess. Carolina could pay for $2M on Ward's contract. Not sure if Robidas could then be also bought out with Murphy taking his slot. If so, seems doable and favorable for all three parties involved.

I do know something HAS to give in Chicago's situation!

The Leafs would have no reason to give up JVR for 3 older players who will be long gone by the time they're ready to contend.

JVR will be breaking 30 when the leafs are ready to contend again. I think we should trade him now when his numbers have been padded by playing with Kessel, as opposed to trading him in his UFA year when his point totals could be less. I also think that Sharp, Bickell, and Versteeg, when traded individually at the deadline, will fetch a far greater combined return than JVR ever will. I am not saying 3 times the return, but I think 1.5-2 times the return is possible.

I agree trading JVR may be a good idea although breaking 30 is hardly too old to be contributing to a contending team. Bickell and Versteeg will likely fetch mid-round picks each, let's say a 2nd and a 3rd for argument sake. I think because of his contract and age JVR has higher trade value than Sharp, so question becomes is the 2nd and 3rd for Bickell and Versteeg greater than the difference between a Sharp and JVR return? Not too sure, but it's an interesting question. And also keep in mind teams will be even more constrained by the cap at the trade deadline.

I thought the Leafs were rebuilding? your left wingers are absolutely awful now. Gibson will probably be the second goalie this year. Next year Gibson and Bibeau.
