Hello Krug and Bye Bye Byram - Just to See It

Description
This is weird (IMO), but just wanted to see what it could look like if the Avs actually landed Krug (due to the rumored interest) and then moved Byram. Initially I wanted to go for a big fish at forward but the cap got in the way and I ended up going futures instead.

Ottawa could just as easily keep their pick and take Drysdale (and the Avs could just as easily not sign Krug and keep Byram), but I figured I'd give it a shot to see what it looked like. Also gave me a chance to play with the 2020 draft before it's too late.

LTIR is just to see the guys I think have a decent to good shot of being NHL players and the players I would assume are in play in the first round.

Anyway, I know most (myself included) aren't super high on signing Krug due to the depth at LD and his price tag. Let's say it happens though. What does the team do with Girard/Byram/Graves/Zadorov/Cole? Playing with that is the main intent of the ACGM. I tried one path but obviously there are others. I think it's more realistic to move Girard once Byram is ready, but that's tough. The whole thing is tough, which is why Krug doesn't make sense to me. The team and pool does look strong though.

Krug and his wife want to be near family, Don't see Colorado as an option. Ottawa should take that and run.

I don't think Colorado would go after Serg (not because of the player but due to the team's situation). Krug is only talked about because he's a UFA. Even then I think it's a bad idea unless he takes a 1-2 year deal, which he won't. Figured I'd play around with the idea though.

I agree on all points, but wanted to try it out. There was pretty much only backlash from Avs fans when the rumor arose (including from me), so this was my attempt to have an open mind.

I was definitely tempted to go for a higher pick or at least give up a lesser prospect than Bowers in the trade but figured I'd get blasted in the comments.

Well if you get krug you cant play him with makar. Krug is more a pp specialist than a top pair dman. You have to staple a defensive dman next to him. Zadorov or Johnson really. Krug was at his best with Carlo coveeing for him in his own zone.

The only very slim way Byram gets traded is if an absolute elite player is coming back like Eichel or Barkov is coming back. 5th OA and Fomenton isn’t getting Byram alone much less Byram and Bowers.

OTTAWA DECLINES. I think Byram and Jake Sanderson, who Ottawa could easily take with the 5th OA if they wanted, are very similar players. The one exception might be that Sanderson's skating is much better than Byram's. So I'm not sure why Ottawa would trade the 5th OA pick for him AND take the obvious loss on Bowers for Formenton.

This is a reminiscent of the Jones-Johanesen trade except there's a swap of top tier prospect so technically it's kinda fair. (Jones migh be the better player right now but Johansen helped the Preds reach the SCF in 2017)

Can't really value Byram higher than those kids since they're all unproven and top prospects.

If the Avs do make that trade, they'll have a shot at elite prospect in a very deep draft (unlike 2019)...whether is forwards (Raymond, Rossi, Perfetti) or even Yaroslav Askarov (kid has been on fire in the KHL as an 18 year old goalie).

Sens might have many issue but I think they would rather keep the 5th pick than trading it for Byram because that pick will fill 1 of their most important needs (legit #1 goalie prospect or elite forward prospect)

They can't keep Krug, Girard, and Byram unles Girard moves to the right. That's questionable too. Byram would be a tough loss for sure, but essentially the choice is:

A: Byram + FA forward (Hall or Dadonov maybe)
B: Krug + Perfetti/Raymond/Rossi + Formenton (assume maybe Ranta instead of Bowers goes the other way)

I'd pass on Krug and keep Byram personally, but it's at least worth exploring considering the rumors. Was gonna go after #2OA or #3OA but decided to be more diplomatic.

The Ottawa trade doesn't make sense for Ottawa. Ottawa has Chabot as their top left side D, and Brannstrom for the second pair.

If Detroit doesn't draft Drysdale, Ottawa probably will, and he gives Ottawa the legit top pair right shot D, and allows Thomson and JBD to battle it out for the second pair, down the road.

Formenton will probably start the season in the AHL, but he's going to be a dangerous middle6 winger at some point this year, and will be one of the fastest skaters in the entire NHL. I understand why you would want LW Formenton over LW Bowers, it's just that Ottawa doesn't need to give more to get Byram, the pick is worth more. Byram will be special, but so will Drysdale, or Raymond, depending on how the draft goes.

Personally I take Byram over Perfetti, Rossi and aRaymond and in all honesty it isn’t close. If Byram were in this draft he is at worst top 4 on top of that Byram is (in a non pandemic year) NHL ready now, where anybody they get at 5 would be at a minimum 2 more years away. Easy easy no from Avs.

Actually I think Girard is pretty good on the right side particularly in transition.

Brannsrom plays on the right though, even though he's a left shot. They do have room for Byram. I hear you though. This won't happen but it's fun to think about.

They're trying to push Brannstrom to the right side because that's an Ottawa need, but they would prefer Brannstrom on the left side.

I have heard he prefers the right. If that's not the case then I agree. Can't say I know for sure, but that's what I heard from Sens fans.

That's the first I've heard that., I can't say it's not true, but it's doubtful since Ottawa brought in Hainsey to play with Brannstrom, partially because Hainsey plays both sides. I do remember reading that Brannstrom was becoming more comfortable on the right side, but it didn't say that he preferred it. With today's D occasionally swapping sides during play, it certainly doesn't hurt to become more comfortable on the offside. I think part of the reason Josh Brown was acquired yesterday was to keep Brannstrom to the left, and hoping Zub can play second pair. Thomson is a very long shot to make the team, and is most likely headed to Belleville. JBD stayed at North Dakota for a third year, where Jake Sanderson is going.
