Sabres decline why give up a draft pick if they get Simon on Friday for free with the pens not qualifying him

Just a question; in my recent post i suggested since this is a pens post and you and other pens will see this

JJ
POJ
Simon
-> SJS
For

Gambrell
3rd 2021

Is that fair for both teams or unfair for pit/sjs

I like that for Detroit, if you're not signing Erne you might as well take Perlini. Erne might come back as a 4th line defensive guy, I would like that.

I see Yzerman qualifying Erne but not Perlini so he'd move Perlini in the deal not Erne. But it's a reasonable offer really don't want JJ now but it's not terrible.

take simon out and it probably works out. You can pull out gambrel if need be.
Simon probably won't play much next year anyway, he's rehabbing a shoulder injury 6 months. So I'm not sure why anyone trades for him right now.
You take that, and the fact that he'll be a UFA next year, I don't see why he signs anything longer than 1 year or why any team signs him for more than that. It's a bad gamble either way.
You miss him probably the whole year, if not close. And shortly after he becomes a UFA to test a market for a bigger role somewhere etc....
I see the penguins offering him 1 year 2 years tops if they think they owe him a second chance after injury.
SJS owes him no such favors.

I like the Kunin at 3C a lot ... He struggled at Center last yr but IMO he will eventually be a very good 3C... Very smart young underrated player

I think it’s pretty good for both sides. I like gambrell as a potential bottom 6 center option and the only thing I’d change is Simon because he’s most likely getting non tendered and SJS could sign him without giving up any assets.

you really think the penguins are the kind of organization to not tender a guy who is on IR after shoulder surgery.
Come on man.
They do have class.
He'll get a league minimum deal. 1 year probably. 2 way is my guess.
They aren't just going to leave him hanging.

It's not a deal that would be massively detrimental to buy out. We have the space to do it for the duration.

6 years of dead money on the books, I'd definitely want their 1st round pick attached to do it.

Oh yeah, I would want the 1st.
I wouldnt riot if we didnt get it, depending on our defence he could play on the bottom pair and then be bought out next summer, freeing up a year. His buyout is never over $2million and not in any years that would really hurt us though.

Totally agree Yzerman could keep him one for a season see how he does, And then look at a potential buyout next summer no big deal.

It certainly seems like they’re going to leave him hanging. https://www.post-gazette.com/sports/penguins/2020/10/03/dominik-simon-penguins-contract-restricted-free-agents/stories/202010030102

not giving a QO and not giving him a contract are two different things.
I highly doubt he doesn't resign. They just don't want arbitration. I'm sure he could sign with another team, but who's going to pick up a guy coming off a shoulder surgery and might not play for awhile?
