Ideal Offseason

Created by: Waddilyp
Team: 2020-21 New York Rangers
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 29, 2020
Published: Oct. 4, 2020
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
I realize that Kreider will most likely not be traded but if he doesn't want to be on the 3rd line he might work with the Rangers to get traded to a team like Colorado.
Rangers offer sheet Sergachev and Tampa doesn't have the cap to match that. They sign Merrill, Grabner and Bogosian to give the team a veteran presence for fairly cheap contracts. Monahan is also traded to the Rangers for ADA and a 1st.

Flames laugh, hang up, book a flight to NY, murder the Rangers GM and then after the funeral take a dump equivalent to this proposal and DeAngelo's character on his grave

Doubt Sergachev would even waste his time on that offer sheet in high taxed New York City, Probably need to offer sheet him in the $7.5M to $8.0M range for him to sign it. He could accept $5M from Tampa and still take home as much as from the Rangers.

IDK what you think Monahan is worth but if you think that a 24 yo defenseman who was on pace to put up 60 points last year (and put up 5 more points than Monahan) and the 22nd overall pick is a horrible trade for Monahan than you really are overvaluing Monahan. Everyone can talk about Deangelo's character and political opinions but his teammates seem to like him, he isn't a locker room problem nor is he a problem whatsoever for the team so that won't affect his trade value.
I'd understand someone saying the Rangers overpaid here or that one of the other trades could use some work but this take is just bad.

You're forgetting the part about how its New York City tho. Everyone playing for Tampa loves Tampa Im sure, but there isn't really a more enticing place for guys to play than in NY. And to be the number one lefty D instead of 3rd? I would sign it. You're either getting the same ticket matched by Tampa and staying put and getting rich, or you get to be the guy in NY

Sergachev, Kucherov and Vasilevskiey are the best of friends and pretty much hang out together quite a bit, So i'm pretty sure he'd rather stay with Tampa with them then go to frigid New York City to play for the Rangers.

While he would theoretically only make 100k less in Tampa if he took that offer of 5M, the tax code is a lot more complicated than that due to jock taxes and the ability to live outside of NYC so that you don't have to pay all of those taxes. When you also account for the bigger market in NYC and the larger potential for merchandise sales and sponsorship deals, Sergachev would likely make significantly more with that offer than the Lightning offering him 5M. However, take this with a grain of salt because I don't know much about the financial workings of NHL players.

I'm not overvaluing anything.

The Flames aren't going to open a gaping ****ing hole at center ice to trade for a first and bigot with a poor attitude that cares about defense as much as he does human rights.

Canadian teams pay less but players make it up with endorsements because Hockey is tops . In Tampa a player gets a free car lease from a local car dealership billboard while in NY they make another million or so for magazine adds that circulated nation wide. Phil Esposito, Anders Hedberg, Ron Duguay, Dave Maloney in old jeans commercial. LOL

Yes, Deangelo is an idiot who has shown bigoted and homophobic views but there are plenty of NHL players who have similarly shown support of the political figures and views that ADA supports (Eichel, Domi, Matthews, Johnson etc.) and none of them are valued less by the NHL because of it and it doesn't seem that ADA is either. The Flames have shown interest in trading Monahan and they have players like Lindholm and Backlund to use at center. I understand if you do not like Deangelo's political views (I don't either) but that doesn't mean that this trade doesn't work for both sides.

1) The Flames just fired a coach less than a year ago for calling a player a racial slur before he joined the club, do you honestly think they are going to bring in someone who has been suspended for doing something similar in juniors? The difference between DeAngelo and the players you mentioned, is is has crossed lines enough to be punished for it. Also with the Wideman/Referee fiasco, adding a guy who has been suspended both in Jr and the NHL for abusive of an official, any suggestion of DeAngelo to Calgary is a PR nightmare.
2) Backlund is a #2C that would be ideal as a #3 on a contender, Lindholm is more comfortable and better on RW and has never played a full season at C in NHL, so if that were to happen it should not be being thrown to the wolves as a #1C. SO yes, that is a gaping hole dude.

This DOES NOT work for Calgary, on the ice or off of it. The only way Monahan is moved is apart of a package for an upgrade.

Well we paid a 3rd and got a 60 point, heavily sheltered defenseman at the deadline. We then heavily sheltered him and he put up points. Mi d you he is a UFA in 8 days so ADA obviously has more value as an RFA. I wouldnt ever trade a 1C for that kind of player though.

Except that you aren't taking position into account here, a 1st line C is way more valuable than a top 4 RHD. DeAngelo can barely play defence as you guys saw in your playoff series so opening up a gaping hole in the C position isnt worth it.
