Trades
1.
VAN
  1. Jones, Martin
  2. 2020 2nd round pick (COL)
Additional Details:
The North Vancouver native comes home. Although inconsistent, he can back up Demko. The pick finalizes the deal.
SJS
  1. Eriksson, Loui
Additional Details:
A bad contract trade off. They pay 6 million for only 2 year. San Jose accepts.
2.
VAN
  1. Stastny, Paul
  2. 2021 2nd round pick (VGK)
Additional Details:
Stastny is an experienced leader. Overpaid, yes. A reliable third liner, also yes. Good defensive play, yes. Offensive contribution, yes.
VGK
  1. Benn, Jordie ($1,000,000 retained)
  2. Gaudette, Adam [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
Vegas gets cap relief, which is really important for them. They also get Gaudette, a third line centre. While Stastny is only signed for 1 more year until he's a UFA, Gaudette is only 24, and could remain in Vegas for many years to come. They get Benn, who may be a back up defender. They still free up 5.5 million, so vegas accepts.
3.

  1. 2020 4th round pick (BOS)
Additional Details:
Almost anything in return will do
NJD
  1. MacEwen, Zack [RFA Rights]

Sharks aren't trading their starting goalie + a coveted draft pick for an overpaid, washed left-handed shot

I'll admit I don't know the Canucks well but what stands out to me if all the long-term deals at low AAV. I suppose they do happen but I don't see too many guys that sign 5x$1MM deals, especially as RFA's. That costs you a lot of money as a player.

I'd think NJD would take Sutter for a year to acquire Virtanen.

I wouldn't do this even if it was Eriksson for Jones 1 for 1. Jones actually has the potential to bounce back whereas Eriksson will never bounce back. No point in us selling low on Jones when we can get his numbers up this year under a better defensively structured team with Boughner and either keep him or trade him when his value is less atrocious.

Stastny for Gaudette and Benn is a very good idea. I don't think the second or the retention should be a part of the deal, though.

The Sharks should jump for joy for the opportunity to get out of the Jones contract.

Ericson should be easy to flip at this point in his contract as it's low salary and high AAV.

Ottawa will take him no questions asked

He's been terrible, not bad, terrible, for two years in a row. He's a lost cause just get out of the contract.

You can flip Ericsson easily to ottawa

I know. I’ve watched Jones nearly every game he’s played in SJ. He has been terrible. But there’s more to it than just “numbers are bad trade him ASAP”. He’s not a lost cause. Jones has negative value right now. You’re not getting rid of him without including at least a 1st in a cap dump trade. Same thing with Eriksson. Like I said, Eriksson has had a billion chances to turn it around and has sucked no matter what. So if this trade was to happen it would have to be 1 for 1.

Jones actually started turning it around toward the end of the year when his work load was reduced and Nabokov became our goalie coach. He still has the ability to turn it around given we give him the right environment he needs. A goalie that can split starts with him would be a great start. A more defensively structured system (which Boughner is implementing) is crucial too. You cant give up 69 2 on 1s a game and expect your goalie to thrive. And like I said having a competent goalie coach would be really helpful as well. I know he can turn into a .905+ goalie if we give him the tools to succeed. Eriksson is and always will be absolutely fried.

I stand by my original statement.

If Eriksson is easily flipped to Ott "no questions asked" then why doesn't Van just do that and not take on an overpriced goalie?

Why is it so important that Vegas needs cap space? They have no significant contracts coming up

Erickson be fried for 2 year. Jones will broil your team and will make you unable to sign younger stars for many years to come.

Yeah, I just think Motte's value will go up very soon so it would be the Canucks advantage to sign him through his career prime. I think he'd accept because he'd get around 800-900k otherwise. But realistically, a 4 year max term for motte and Stecher would be better. I'll keep that in mind for next time. Thanks for the tip!

It was more than that. Do you think Toffoli will sign for two years or dadonov for 1?

I see the advantage for the Canucks but j don't get it form the players perspectives
