I think if Cernak moves, its below the compensation threshold. It would be in an effort to clear up additional money for Cirelli and Sergachev. losing those two would be much more detrimental. Furthermore, he may be worth 4.5mm but hes probably not worth an unprotected 1st and 3rd. If I am breisbois I honestly would rather give up cernak for a a second or less if it means getting to keep one of the other two.
Equally, If one of the other two go, I would put my money on another team trading for their rights, which allows them to work outside of those compensation bands. The worst possible scenario for the bolts would probably be losing them for picks only. Picks, that wont even be made until a year from now. That said, somebody calls bresibois and says "hey I dont want to offer sheet your guy if we dont have to. lets work something out where I can give you the roster players you need, and I dont have to give up predetermined (and unprotected) picks," I feel like that would be less painful. If a team like the devils says, 'Ill give you 18 and 20 plus severson or butcher 50% retained,' I think that is a lot more attractive to the lightning than a 2021 1st that could be anywhere between 1-31, and a 3rd rounder.
