Description

On his podcast Jimmy Hayes said he was hearing that the Rangers are going to trade 1OA to Ottawa for 3OA and Brady Tkachuk. Normally would laugh at the suggestion but only reason this rumor should get any credence is because Hayes is Tkachuk’s cousin, so who knows if he knows something. As much as I love the idea of getting Laf I think NYR would have to do this cause you’re getting a good young player in Tkachuk and you’re still getting one of Byfield or Stutzle. I don’t really see why Ottawa would do this unless they’re absolutely in love with Laf and think he’s the next Mcdavid. Rangers would still have to find a LHD pair for Trouba but they have about 5.8 million in cap space to work with, 22OA and a ton of tradeable assets so someone like Lindholm or Hanifin could be obtainable. Rangers definitely have a lot of options.

It doesn’t make sense for Ottawa imo but I know Rangers said they’d only trade 1 if they are blown away. Most likely both teams stay where they are but just think it’s worth mentioning.

I feel like if the rangers were offered this they should take it. They get a star left wing anyway w the added bonus of 1 of 2 future number 1 centers

I agree but only thing that makes me think is that he is Tkachuk’s cousin. Definitely something to take with a grain of salt but it’s out there

IF this bares fruit, both teams should do it, and add three more pieces:

Ottawa send Batherson and Tkachuk plus 3rd OA

Rangers send Strome's rights, Smith plus 1st OA.

Ottawa gets a cap floor contract it needs with Smith; fits under the same umbrella. Batherson and Strome is pretty much a straight swap, as Ottawa gets a center and another cap hit and valuable player to fit in their lineup (not to mention a right spot center to play with LaFreniere and likely Duclair, forming your new top line). For the Rangers, offsetting this deal with Batherson doesn't make it an overpayment. Tkachuk is solid and aggressive; but LaFreniere gives Ottawa a pretty close Matthews, so the snickers and jeers is pointless. Even if the Rangers end up with Byfield or Rossi, the move is a bigger grab for Ottawa.
